Forums - Gaming - It's On: Apple Calls Out Sony and Nintendo Directly

I cant consider apple competitors, because well....they aint. Just look at the damn games for iphone, theyre not exactly proper games now are they?

Plenty of people said the same thing about Nintendos casual software in the beginning. Its irrelivant if you consider them proper games or not, they are games and they are selling and Apple is making big bucks without really even trying because its all the 3rd parties and independants doing the work for them.

Although I do not thing the mobile and handheld gaming sectors are the same thing. They will co-exist, not destroy each other.

Lordy have mercy! 50,700 games?

Damn... if Nintendo consoles have shovelware, Apple has shovelwaves!!!

Funny.

I wonder how many of those 50,700 are actually games.

Exactly a lot of the games are cheap casual games that are boring as hell

I am Kong.

Strong and passionate, I tend to be misunderstood, sometimes even feared. I don't want to fight, I don't want to cause trouble, all I ask is a little love, and a little peace. If I don't get what I want, I get angry, and throw barrels and flaming oil at whatever's stopping me. What Video Game Character Are You?

iphone = portable, so your logic of convinience doesnt make sense.

That's not the point I was trying to get across. I'm saying that just like the iPhone is capable of playing games, a computer is capable of doing calculations. But a calculator is better suited (in the example provided the reason for it being better suited is convenience) to perform such a task much like dedicated handheld gaming devices backed by major publishers with development kits centered around game creation is better suited for gaming than an iPhone which has a single (fairly extensive) devkit utilized for any app created on the platform, no buttons, and not many heavy hitting games.

I'm not saying gaming is impossible on the iPhone. I'm sure there are a lot of addictive smaller casual games on it that I'd enjoy myself (Homerun 3D was one I got pretty addicted to) but it simply cannot substitute a dedicated handheld gaming device for someone like me and many other gamers accustomed to fully-fledged, highly polished titles.

fair enough. Well personally i think it all depends on the casual market - its unlikely that the "hardcore" handheld users like yourself are going to sway towards apple, but what about the other "casual" section of DS, they seem like they dont really care about major publishers (base on the attachment ratio).

I was more wondering if they are including the fart apps, how many of those are on the app store? 15?

Ah, the effrontery!
Apple really believes it can make more shovelware than Sony and Nintendo?
Game on.

There is a big difference between nintendo games and some lil phone games tho. Its like saying some lil keychain games thing like that old donkey kong, or something from a happy meal is a competitor.

they are success because they figured out their market

Market (100%) = stupid buyers (70%) + smart buyers (30%)

Stupid buyers = buys crap

crap = apple's 50,000 games

apple = easy money

How silly.

Quality >>>>> Quantity

the iphone may be better than the PSP but it can only have dreams about being in the same world as the DS, let alone compete with it!!

PSP hater alert.. just because you didn't buy any PSP games, doesn't mean it doesn't have good games..

as far as quality it's better by miles.

Define a proper game then.

They certainly aren't as good in regards to the quality of Nintendos games but very few "proper" games developers are either. And I didn't say they were direct competitors, I personally think the two segments of the "mobile market" eg the handheld makets and the phone markets can co-exist. But to dismiss apple is silly as the games sector is becoming increasinly profitible for them.
