I won't say 3rd parties can't sell on the Wii, but I think most of the comparisons don't prove much of anything.

Why? A few reasons.

Install base. Sometimes in the examples the author says "well, X Wii game sold as much as Y PS3 game" even with a almost 2x install base.

Release date. Some of the games (madworld and bayonetta especially) are released at drastically different times.

Game library. The PS3 and 360 have a decent amount of FPSs where as the Wii doesn't have as many. You can't expect a relatively not well known fish in a massive ocean of FPSs (Timeshift) to sell as much 1 of 5 fishes in a tiny aquarium (The Conduit).

Numbers. Sometimes it seems like the author is pitting WW numbers versus regions numbers of other games (I might be wrong on this one).

I can tell you why third parties don't sell well on the Wii. It's because Nintendo makes by far the best games in the world and why should the Wii's owners buy that other stuff?

Especially when they pale in comparison to even the PS2 games, which the Wii sure as hell can handle.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Basically, yeah. Either make a game as good as a Nintendo game or GTFO 3rd parties. Sad, but that's the reality of it.  We're goin on the HD value scale whether you like it or not. Anything less than a meta 90 can suck a fart out of my ass, and it better fucking NOT be a port. Unless it's Nintendo **BECAUSE** Nintendo has a history of making good games so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. And I personally don't give a fuck, I'm up to 356 hours of Mario Kart Wii and I have no problems goin another 500 and that's not counting the rest of my pile of Wii games which is almost exclusively Nintendo titles.

In short: Third parties on Wii are not selling because all of their games suck a big fat monster dong. There's no mystery or special rules, they just suck.

Take a look at that wall (major 3rd party wii efforts) and tell me how many of those you'd actually buy:

(no, they're not cherry picked, that's actually the best 3rd parties can come up with, useless fuckrags)

You bring up some good points. However you have to realize that the Wii titles don't sell enough to be considered very successful. You list some of the best selling Wii third party titles against some of the not so well selling third party games on 360/PS3. Example RedSteel2 failing to sell as well as the Conduit and will likely fall short of UbiSoft's minimum 500,000 copies. With none of the exclusive Wii shooters breaking the million mark albeit the first RedSteel I can't see how you can consider the Wii as a viable platform for hardcore shooters and online titles.

That being said third party hardcore titles will sell from established franchises like MonsterHunter for example. However new titles have a hard time. I think The Conduit 2 might be able to change that and so could other titles. However I think publishers are expecting to much for the Wii. 300,000 copies should not be considered a failure considering the budget that goes into it. I'd say anything over 200,000 should be considered a success when compared to a HD game that sells like 400,000.

You can't just compare Call of Duty to Brothers in Arms. They're in completely different leagues.

Agreed

The rest of the article is very well written though and I heartily agree
