Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony's OtherOS removal defeated...

A feature we didn't pay for like playing future games and Blu Rays?

you own the console not the XMB: sony has the right to change the XMB and thus they told you what they would be changing before they did it.

and that there would be effect's of the update to the xmb . thus you as the consumer has to make up your mind if you want to update. this is the same thing when Microsoft XP service pack 2 issue with loss of some software functionality due to going from service pack 1 to service pack 2.

you are granted a License to use the XMB you do not own it.

software licensing

Allowing an individual or group to use a piece of software. Nearly all applications are licensed rather than sold. There are a variety of different types of software licenses. Some are based on the number machines on which the licensed program can run whereas others are based on the number of users that can use the program. Most personal computer software licenses allow you to run the program on only one machine and to make copies of the software only for backup purposes. Some licenses also allow you to run the program on different computers as long as you don't use the copies simultaneously.

I am sorry guys, but his intentions were malicious from the start it does not matter what Sony did, he would have done custom firmware eventually, please do not use this, goodness knows what it will bring to PS3, if you like spyware and viruses and getting personal information stolen, go for it.

None of that can happen over PSN because the hypervisor would stop any unsigned code being able to run on your PS3.  That my friend is FUD Sony chucked out there to try and fool people they were doing this for some altruistic purpose, its just not possible and they know it.

maybe not on some PS3's with CFW's, that's also a problem some PSP's with CFW's had been bricked due to unassigned code. yes the security an protection of the PS3 is by far more robust than the PSP but anything can happen. never say never.

sorry but custom firmware already has been done, as to whether it's genuine is a different matter, and trust me if they can run custom firmware on ps3, expect more things to be able to be achieved on custome firmware:(:(

like the fact that it could end up bricking ps3's!

yes you can Hack anything but breaking the security and protection's also leave it open to other hack's some you may not even want!

You really don't know about the PSP modding scene then do you.  EVERY software bricked PSP can be retrieved by reflashing with Pandora, but carry on as I know you'll lose this debate.

You made a claim that this is protecting the customer, how about you prove this by showing me just one link of how custom firmware on the PS3 resulted in someones details being hacked.  Spyware, viruses and your personal information are all protected by your PS3's hypervisor, the only consoles at risk would be those running custom firmware with their hypervisor disabled.  Trust me, you do not understand what you're talking about in this particular instance.

just remind us all how long it took them to bring out the pandora method lol, a long time in the meanwhile lots of bricked psp's was sold (at a loss) and lots of unhappy users as a result, i am just trying to highlight how it can be bad for user's.

as for my knowledge hello I am a developer, I do know what I'm talking about I could create some nasty applications if I really wanted, but I choose not to, it will not take them long to figure it out as nothing is unbreakable, it just took them longer to do it for PS3 (the first hack).

I'll say it once again just in case you skipped what I said last time.  You CANNOT RUN UNSIGNED CODE on a PS3 due to the hypervisor.  It is impossible without hacking the PS3 with hardware locally.  Look up how the security works on the PS3 and what the hack does, the leap your talking about is years away and in all likelyhood impossible regardless.

I don't give a toss about "unhappy" users who bricked their PSP's, the same as anyone who wipes out their drive key flashing a 360 or indeed kills their PS3 by attempting to hack it.  If you cannot afford to break something then don't modify them, there is really only one person to blame and that is the user themselves.  Pandora came out about 2 years after the release of the PSP, the number of bricks out there wasn't that excessive and many bricks were actually returned to stores rather than "sold at a loss".

I vaguely admire damnyoualls passion. He has, afterall, racked up nearly as many posts on a single topic theme as I have in around three years. Still, I think you need to sit back and relax damnyuouall and find other avenues. the firmware update is like 4e d and D. It's here. use it or don't. I played 4e for 8 months and was bored by the board game style. Between 4e and stopping saga, Wizards no longer produces a game that I enjoy playing. That deeply disappoints and frustrates me, but
i can't make them change. I do other things that are less likely to get me upset. There are other rpgs, videogames, amusing books where Lincoln kicks vampire ass, I have even heard vague rumors of a species known as "females". I am eager to do further field research on the latter someday. The point is .. it is okay to take some time off from something if it upsets you deeply. If you don't enjoy the 360 or Wii have you tried pc gameing? Do you have other hobbies? Just take a step back and use the time to cool down and enjoy other parts of life.
