Ahhhhhh its so easy to say "it will never happen" or "it will definitly happen" with confidence when were in the middle of the year where you have weekly sales gap are not huge, then comes the holidays where things starts picking up and where these companies go all out in marketing and price battle this is where you say "shit!!(clears throat), I never said it wouldn't/would happen at all".

The XBox 360 shipped 38.7 million units by the end of 2009.
The PS3 sold to retail 33.5 million units by the end of 2009.

That's a 5.2 million gap.

The XBox 360 shipped 600K less units in 2009 than in 2008, if XBox 360 sales drop again by 600K in 2010 and the PS3 slim is able to achieve 15 million sales for 2010 as expected by many the PS3 will have overtaken the XBox 360 by the end of this year by a few hundred thousand units.

I actually believe it will likely happen... but only when it isnt so important, ie after the start of the next gen. 

Sony will skip the startof the next gen I think to regain some kudos and momentum, thus saving some cash and making some profits on a (by then) cheap to produce PS3

So next xbox and next wii launch first... then a couple of years later the next playstation launches.

Sony fans will say... see.. told you PS3 would outslell 360 (!?)...  360 fans will say... it doesnt count any more I'm playing my 720 or whatever its called.

I agree that the ps3 will outsell the xbox eventually like you said, just out of curiosity what year do you think it will happen? late 2012 is when I expect it to, maybe early 2013.

probably by the end of the first year after the next gen starts... 

But what side do you stand on? I mean, if PS3 does in fact end up outselling 360......then how could anyone deny that it doesn't count? I mean, I don't care what I'm playing right now, if Gamecube suddenly outsold the original Xbox today...it would still count.

BTW I honestly don't see MS letting Sony just nab a 8 million + lead from them (I'm refferring to the peak of the gap)

By the time the PS3 gets close enough to close the gap, I think it won't matter anymore, from every point of view. The next generation will be right around the corner and MS will still have had a tremendous generation behind them and perhaps almost tripled the sales of the original x-box, which is a feat to be commended.
I can only imagine what Sony and MS will do next gen to 1up one another but it does bode well for us gamers!

Lol, 360 drop by 600k again, even when this year it will have a slim, price drop, and console rebranding (and Natal)?  Not gonna happen.

PS3 15 million this year with no price drop, slim, or console rebranding this time (only Move this year)?  Not gonna happen.

I think Playstation Move and Gran Turismo 5 may have a positive impact this year.

Its as confirmed as the PS3 Slim was this time last year.  Everyone thought those pics and videos were fake only to be proven real.  Now the 360 slim has even more reliable evidence than the PS3 Slim did so yes I believe it is a certainty.

As for PS Move and GT5, those will be countered by Natal and Halo: Reach.  But as I said, MS will be the one with more momentum driving changes this year so you will see it likely sell a few million more than any year so far and the PS3 will sell 13 million or less.
