$40m Natal game' planned by THQ

But 'we have to wait for install base to grow to justify money'

THQ has a "$40m Natal game" in the think tank - but will wait for the device's install base to grow before starting development to justify the huge price tag.

That's what THQ's core games VP, Danny Bilson told CVG. He said: "I have some concepts and some ideas that use Natal in a core game in a really, really cool way.

"But to your other question I don't think the experience with the technology is there, I don't think the install base is there because the game I'm thinking about is a $30m/$40m Natal game and the install base isn't there yet to support that. The concept I have uses every corner of that tech and maybe in a couple of years we'll do it."

He added: "So there's core potential there but on the creative side I'm absolutely focused on core... so an idea I have for that, aside for the one that we have, is a big core game.

"I think we have to wait a little bit just for the install base to justify spending a ton of money. Because my idea is a really expensive idea."

It's not all ideas though; Bilson revealed that THQ has one "awesome" Natal game coming this year that Microsoft's "really excited about," plus "a bunch" of family and kids games.

We're intrigued. Show us the game, THQ.

Interesting. I do hope that Natal gets enough sales to justify some third party support, becuase I guess if it doesn't it's kind of a fail. Bring on the big hitta, THQ!

So "$40m" is a selling point now? If anything, it shows lack of efficiency concerning development and planning.

If your goal is to make money you really shouldn't be proud of $40m budgets, especially when you're THQ.

hmmm looking forward to THQ's "awesome" Natal game this year then....
Or let's just say I can't wait until they show it @ E3.

Just what I was thinking. Unless Microsoft funds this, why would they ever take such a risk? I mean, if most publishers complained about PS3 development costs to justify going exclusive, I don't see how this adds up.

Either way, we know nothing about the game at the moment, so we'll see what it's like before we make a final judgement.

Well, a large budget usually implies large amounts of artistic content.  That is the most expensive part of game creation now.  Getting tons of artists to crank out high quality textures, models, music, sound, etc.  Just like movies.  Sure, a movie can still be good on a small budget, but a great Lord of the Rings movie can only really be done on a massive budget.
