Forums - Sony - Can Sony create a new franchise as big as Gran Turismo?

If you ask me, the reason Sony has thrown so much money at software development is in hopes of creating a franchise as popular as GT, Halo, CoD, etc.

They haven't done it yet and I don't see it happening this decade either.

So much money? are you on crack? Their 2 best games have the same budget as 1 Natal game from THQ. And Natal doesn't have the user base as ps3 (probablly will never have Ps3s current user base) and I highly doubt THQ would expect Halo type numbers. Good try though.

BTW - Those are the only 2 games we really know the budget for and I doubt sony would green light games for much higher than that considering ND is a proven developing company. (oh sorry. excluding PD in this comment since their sonys bread and butter and GT5's budget is just a little bigger than that THQ game anyway)

What games are you talking about?

Both Uncharted 1 and 2 had 20 million dollar budgets for a grand total of 40 million. Thats a high budget game no doubt but not a budget that would indicate "thrown so much money at software in hopes to sell 10 mil +"

Hell, Heavenly Sword and Lair also had similiar budgets. Do you really think those developers even thought their games had as much appeal as the 10 mil club? Hell no... did they think their game would sell better than they did? Probablly.

Haha, you crack me up. You now compare everything to a big budget Natal game we know nothing about?

I know they said the budget of Uncharted 2 was $20 million. But you don't actually think that includes advertising? They might have dropped $10+ million on that. Which isn't uncommon for a big budget game.

God of War 3 was said to have a budget of $40 million. I'm not sure if that includes advertising.

Killzone 2's budget was $40 million, that does not include advertsing budget. They said they spent on $2 million on adveringing in the UK alone. Imagine the advertising budget for the rest of the world.

You're entitled to your opinion. But you don't have to be a douche when you share it with me.

God of War 3 has the budget because the other 2 have sold 4 million a piece. What makes you think Sony thinks they'll more than double their first 2 sales with the 3rd? You are pull stuff outta your ass and are very ignorant. KZ sold 2 million. What makes you think Sony would increase sales by 8 million? There is no evidence supporting your assumption. Its just nonsense. BTW - according to someone who works in the biz HS cost no more than 25 million and thats pushing it he says. HS was in development longer than KZ2, had better VA, has a better musical score, story and both companies made their own engines! Those numbers you use for KZ figures where rumors from a rumor monger that no longer exists LOL! You can't be serious. I personally think HS cost more than that but at the same time I think KZ2 cost less than you say. And if GoW3 had a budget of 40 million there is no way Sony would green light a newly aquried un-proven dev with unproven franchise the same budget, Get real dude.

Well I'll continue to think Sony put mega budgets into their games and you can think otherwise.

That's a weird way to think about it... Because they make a lot of new games, that's evidence they're hoping for something to go big?? You really think SONY or any major company would try something as stupid as to toss large amounts of money into tons of projects IN HOPE of getting lucky?
