Forums - Gaming - 3D TVs, and possibly gaming going to take off MUCH faster than HD TV imo

I keep hearing people say that a lot of people just switched to HDTVs, so obviously they won't go out and spend a fortune on new TVs now, but it's also my understanding that the majority of HD console owners play on SDTVs, and that there are still a lot of people with SDTVs out there. What's to stop them from seeing 3D as the final push for getting a flatscreen TV?

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that you seem to be blowing this waaay out of proportion, since all I have heard is that 3DTV growth is going up strong, and I really haven't seen anything to support the notion that current HDTV owners will be a problem. I could be wrong, maybe I just haven't seen the right numbers, but you get my point.

If someone didn't buy a HDTV to enjoy their console, will they be the kind of people who are early adopters of 3DTVs?

If 3DTVs were just 3DTVs, I'd agree with you, but they are HDTVs with 3D on top. If they didn't see HD alone as reason enough for an upgrade, isn't it possible that 3D will push them into getting a new TV? I don't remember there being as much HD content at this point in the HDTVs lifecycle as there is now 3D content up and coming, though I could be wrong.

All the 3D movies we are seeing in theaters will only help of course (a benefit HD didn't really enjoy), and Sony upgrading the PS3 to play true stereoscopic 3D games and movies just means you will have even more people with added incentive for upgrading to 3D.

It's definitely possible, I just question that it will be a big number of people doing that early enough to give 3DTVs a much faster adoption than HD had.

Meh, I already wear glasses having to wear two pairs of glasses at once while sitting at home...yeah not very comfortable, I have no interest in 3D while it requires glasses, I don't even think much of it in the cinema

If they haven't spent $500 on an HDTV by now, what makes you think they'll spend even 10% more for a 3D-enabled television? These are the late adopters we're talking about... price is 99% of their decision.

I'm not saying they'll buy one right now, I'm just saying that 3D could be what pushes them into getting a HD/3DTV at some point. And as I responded to NJ5, right now I'm seeing a lot more general excitement for 3D than compared to what I remember about HD at this point in its lifecycle.

Your original points were that people who had recently upgraded to HD won't upgrade to 3D soon, and I agree with that, but I still think you are blowing the importance of this group out of proportion. That's all I'm saying.

the reason i'm generally don't adopt new technology very early is the whole chicken and the egg issue.  without hardware you can't consume the software but if no one has the hardware no one creates the software...

one big advantage 3D adoption has, imo, is there are already 30+ million ps3s out there and some also significantly large number of stand alone blu-ray players that will be able to do 3D.  obviously the adpotation rate will take time but a pretty significant head start towards success.

This is all a bit silly anyway. Until we have a real idea of HOW Sony plans on implementing the PS3 3D (as well as how the blueray association is doing it for br players) why get on the bandwagon now?

I am waiting to see Sony/BR Association release real information on how they are going to do this. BR will be viewable in 3D (and Im assuming they will work on these tvs, has to be why they are selling for this right now), but what of Games? That is what I am waiting for.

3D TVs are neat, but the needed glasses do present a very unwanted barrier. Even if you own several pairs it just takes away the convenience factor that the masses may not buy into. It just depends on whether or not 3D catches on before the next big thing (3D without glasses) arrives.

You guys are kind of talking about the same thing. People will upgrade to 3D TV at some point but just not the near future.

For the consumers that already owned a HDTV in the last few years, it would take at least another 5 years before they spend another big purchase to upgrade.

For consumers who has yet upgraded to HDTV, price is definitely a factor. They would either go for the cheap HDTV now instead of buying the expensive 3DTV or wait even longer until price of 3D TV to go down at current HDTV level or lower. That's gonna be another 3 years or so.

And that is without considering the whole glasses issue.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
