I'm not saying they'll buy one right now, I'm just saying that 3D could be what pushes them into getting a HD/3DTV at some point. And as I responded to NJ5, right now I'm seeing a lot more general excitement for 3D than compared to what I remember about HD at this point in its lifecycle.
Your original points were that people who had recently upgraded to HD won't upgrade to 3D soon, and I agree with that, but I still think you are blowing the importance of this group out of proportion. That's all I'm saying.
