If you only want to read comments from people who are directly affected, turn off vgchartz and go to psfanboyforums.com or something.
It's not that important, though it is something that would help me justify a purchase of a cheap used PS3. But that's not even what I was discussing so why bring it up?

I wonder what exactly he expected from Sony? This is exactly what I expected they'd do, stop the hack. Now he's going to get in an updating hacks war against Sony because of some self righteous belief that he was wronged? How can someone with so much technical knowledge be so illogical at the same time?

Oh dear, perhaps its really not a good idea to give a hacker like Geohot a "mission". Until this news he had no intention of continuing with any PS3 hack development, looks like they've just encouraged one of the best hackers out there to rejoin the battle.
@Torillian - I think he summed up pretty much why he didn't think they'd bother reacting at all. His hack doesn't really damage Sony in terms of sales as piracy is not possible and its only possible on a discontinued product.
Who the hell is using latest firmware and PS3 Linux ClUSTER?? NO ONE... today the cost of the console X MPIS available can be reached with other equip´s... soo... it´s not a big deal and I know this attack against this is from Sony Haters ... not from Sony users that really uses Linux on the PS3..
I´ve been reading the most IGNORANT threads here... people saying.."Ohhh nooo... now I will not update my PS3 to let it with linux server support for media broadcast and buy a SLIM"... OMG... PS# as media server, this guy is f$#@ up...
Grow up ppl...

he's saying that hacking into someone else's system using this hack isn't possible, not that he can't screw over sales with it. Sony mentioned security reasons, which is indeed a bunch of crap, but this hack could have hurt their sales and they acted to stop that as any business would. If they hadn't people would be calling them idiots and saying it was another bad business decision by them.

Telling the public a lie is worse PR than a bad business decision. As I already stated earlier this will not stop anyone working on a hack anyway and any PS3 will be downgradable back to a earlier version so if piracy becomes possible anyone with a fat model will be able to get back other OS functionality.
This decision makes ZERO sense to me and many others.

they can downgrade it yes but atleast now they won't be able to play online with the hacked PS3. That's probably the only possible recourse or punishment Sony can give to the people who will use this for piracy so they did the most they could. He hacked their system and they acted to protect their best insterests, how is this a surprise?
