Forums - Gaming - What makes a game look great this gen? Console power or dev devotion?

Thankfully, I own both PS3 and Xbox 360. So I can play games for both consoles. Both the PS3 and X360 have games that are considered graphic powerhouses, at least in my eyes. We got Forza 3, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Gears and many more to mention. Lately, its been a good ride for PS3 owners. Last year there was Killzone 2, uncharted 2. This years, its Heavy Rain and God of War 3.

I've seen many people on the internet say that the cause of it was the PS3's power, saying that the 360 cant handle this game or that game and of course the usual promotional quote..."Its only possible on PS3". Some people agree and some dont. I disagree.

I'm not saying the Xbox 360 has more or the same power as the Playstation 3. Im just saying that the Xbox 360 has more potential yet. I dont believe its maxed out or none of that bull i hear all over. Games like Forza 3 and Gears 2 have shown what the Xbox can pull off. Big games like Mass Effect 2 are well done on the platform as well.

My question is this. Is Sony's machine that far ahead of the Xbox, thus making the PS3 games look so brilliant, or are developers not taking full advantage of the 360 hardware and are just lazy? Are PS developers doing more than 360 developers, or is the hardware too "ahead of the game"? I agree that the 360 has more potential. Alan Wake looks pretty good but I think we will eventually see better.

As for your question, it has a lot to do with dev devotion solely in the graphics department. Just look at Super Mario Galaxy. That game looks amazing and it's on the Wii.

I don't think PS3 developers are doing more to make their games look better than 360's games, they are just making the most out of the hardware.

You can thank the bigger Sony first party for that. They're continously pushing the console. MS is also doing that with Gears, Fable and Forza for example, but they have fewer parties purely dedicated to their platform, making it seem like the PS3 is hitting it left and right recently.

As always, developer devotion trumps technical firepower.

I'd argue that Metroid: Other M is one of the best-looking games this generation, despite it being on the Wii. I'm not a huge fan of 3D Metroid but there's no way I'm not picking up that game.

I'd say artstyle actually. But if you're speaking purely in technical terms, developer devotion would be it.

I'll go praising the dedicated Developers...thanx to santa monica studio or NAugty dog or devs who created games like little big planet, Heavy Rain.

Maybe I'm not trying hard enough, but I own both and I don't really see the difference in power between the 360 and the PS3. But, in my opinion, it's not either/or. It's a combination of both.
