I actually am having a lot of fun with it. I wasn't aware of the poor reviews until now actually, and am rather surprised. The world is really cool, and I love the art style. It's a place I like exploring around, and while not as realistic or detailed as FF13, is a lot prettier in a good number of places (at least in cocoon, where most of pretty stuff is off in the distance there is another location in FF13 which is very organic and beautiful). One thing I liked about this game was the Camera, and FF13 didn't have that (and I wanted it).
The battle system isn't really as bad as the comments here are saying. I did like the force type stuff, but I would have preferred more diversity in the battle system; and turn based rather than action.
Anyway, if you play the game and try not to be a critic (ie. someone who makes sure the game is exactly in the style that all good Final Fantasy titles should be) then you'll really enjoy it, it has a lot of strong points which I bet these reviews do not take into account at all.
The map in the game is not helpful at all, but it is one of those games where you can get really used to the world very quickly and don't really need a map. Still, that is one feature left out that really confused me.
