Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The DS and Wii userbase will not make games hits that are not hit material.

Nice thread lordthenightknight, and one of the main reasons that having twice as big a userbase wont lead to twice as big sales is that the consoles with a higher userbase get more games so the total software sales might be bigger, but they'll be split more ways

i'm going to ignore all the crying and get right you the point.

"This was inspired by the thread about GTA Chinatown Wars, but this is broader than that. This is about the supposed notion that userbase is to blame for a game not selling well."

Wrong, it is the user bases fault. nintendo fans have flooded vgchartz lately with threads crying about third parties not bring the kind of games the market leader deserves. "oh noes, the developers are lazy" you say. "they didn't advertise enough" you say. "they aren't bringing their top tier franchises" you say. well too bad, GTA:CW is an amazing game from a great brand that had great advertising and still it failed. the reason: the nintendo userbase doesn't want the GTAs, the No More Heroes, the Red Steels, the muramasas...

Cry all you want but here is the honest truth of the matter. Nintendo is a great developer, no doubt about it. but nintendo makes a certain type of game: family friendly, cartoony, simplistic, with unique user interfaces. the userbase of the wii and the ds were created on the backs of great nintendo hits like nintendogs, new super mario brothers, mario kart, wii fit, wii sports.

now take particular notice to what those games are not like...they're not at all like GTA. but you know who is making games much more similar to GTA? Sony and Microsoft. consumers aren't stupid, consumers that want simple family friendly fair are going to buy wiis, consumers that what complex violent fair are going to buy 360s or ps3.

in the end, nintendo systems don't deserve games like GTA, dead space, assassins creed, ect any more then the ps3 deserves the port of EA active it's getting. the userbase just isn't there.

+1000

Agreed. And no this is not trolling

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

I suspect Wii/DS owners are actually more discerning than the hardcore gamers on the PS3 and 360, those games are more concerned with graphics and other core gamer things, while Wii/DS owners are concerned with fun and value

chinatown is a great game, but the reason it didn't sell is that the game wasn't what people expecting

people expected something like the Psp titles, more 3D

that's why it didn't sold like Vice City/Liberty City on Psp either

it is a better game than those, but still, people prefer the Vice/Liberty City style by a lot

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Ok, let's assume you're right here. How would you explain sales of PSP version? Where're those millions and millions of people who bought GTAs on PSP? Nowhere to be found, it seems. So again whose fault is this?

Why DS hasn't got the same excuse? Why all these people who previously bought GTAs on PSP now, like you suggest, pirated it instead?

He cannot explain that...

You could argue about the userbase all you want, however truely excellent games have the opportunity to breach the normal constraints of their particular genres and cater to a wide variety of people who would not have otherwise considered the game. Pretty much any truely excellent game which has qualities far above and beyond the norm show this characteristic. If you consider the absolute top selling games, you don't consider Mario for example as made up of the entire audience of people who like platformers, you couldn't say the genre is that big because no other platformer reaches such epic heights in sales. Therefore you can't say that a game has to rely on the userbases own interests, the problem here is that 3rd parties have not created these truely excellent titles for the Wii and have instead relied on some mediocre standard level of support for mediocre games.
