Forums - Nintendo - So, megaflop GTA: CW for DS reached 1M

As a side note, GTA III took up just 700MB on the Xbox version, which means Rockstar could actually put a full 3D GTA game on the DS, even with the radio stations. Just the voice acting for the story scenes would have to be text. I think that would kick ass.

Do Las Santos stories, even if it's just the city and not the wooded areas.

IMO it sold bad because they made it on the DS, thus having to settle for classic isometric view because of DS limitations, making it not appeal as a GTA game. GTA 1 and 2 on Ps1 were never really popular for same reason. Makes sense considering GTA LC and VC stories sold well on PSP because it's a faithful GTA game. I blame the platform, the game did the best it could with what it had to work with.

thats BS.

check out the GTA ripp ff ubisoft have been working on for DS. it is in 3d looks good. I can't remember what the game is called. It was like Cop or something

C.O.P. The Recruit.

And it indeed looked pretty damn good on the DS. I'm quite certain Rockstar could have done even better.

No carl thats not what I think at all, I don't believe the ps3 or psp are flops just like i don't  believe GTA:CW is a flop but, I do agree on the pspgo is a flop although i always thought sony only released it to make money so in a sense its probably doing its job and not meant to compete with the DS, i think both the ps3 and 360 are both great consoles i had all three of them and if I wasn't a broke college student i would still have my ps3, which i sold to my brother so I still have it. I'm comparing them because I don't expect the ps3 to finish much above the psp.

The comparing PSP Go situation to PS3 situation was aimed at atma, i just quoted his to make it easier. Sorry for the confusion on that.

oh its cool then

What pisses me off is many developers won't with Nintendo.

Wow, people really need to chill.

GTA: CW is a flop, I don't really care if it made money or didn't (I would assume it didn't).

It's a flop because it didn't sell well for a GTA game, period. Not that 1.5 million is bad, but it's just not...great.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not being a fanboy with my following statements, they are my opinion based on some facts.

The game flopped on the DS probably because of the style (graphical and gameplay styles) and potentially some other factors (demographics, lots of other games to chose from, lack of marketing, etc.). I say it flopped because it's a GTA game specifically designed for and (seemingly at the time) exclusive to a system and it sold to a very very small percentage of owners of that system.

For the record, Lair, Haze, Soul Calibur Broken Destiny and lots of other Sony exclusive games are also flops, so, don't go there.

The game flopped on the PSP because, to be consistent, the game is selling at roughly the same percentage as the DS game, so, flop. It probably flopped for some slightly different reasons. Obviously the game play and art style reasons are the same. Some of the game play elements just don't work on the PSP that well as they did with the stylus. Also, the game came out long after people were exposed to it on the DS and thus, perhaps people were less willing to buy it for the PSP based on the GTA name alone. So, the PSP game flopped for the similar reasons as the DS version, just swap out "demographics" with "not the best of ports."

Overall though, the game is a flop because no one liked the game not because of a system it was on (I mean seriously? What kind of logic is that? I mean I could see if a system had like 80%+ of a certain demographic that things may not sell, but no one can possibly believe any system doesn't have a large spread).

Actually a lot of people liked this game. Check any meta rankings website just to see how critically acclaimed both the DS (higher scores overall) and PSP versions were (90%+). So to reiterate: the quality of the game didn't result in "limited" sales.

@glinggling

Sorry, I know that it got good reviews. What I meant by "no one liked the game" was not literal, it was more of "no one liked the game enough to buy it" :)

It seemed to be of good quality, the title just didn't translate to sales even with good quality and a HUGE brand name.

Critics is not a lot of people. That just reinforces how limited the gaming enthusiast community actually is.

You're right, critics aren't "a lot" of people. But spread over 60+ reviewers it indicates a general attitude towards the quality of the game. Also take a look at Amazon.com and Google Shopping feedback reviews. While it is all anecdotal, it all points in the same direction. Combined with the sales figure it is enough to safely say that a lot of people like this game.

I'm not denying those who played the game like it, but the style turned off a hell of a lot of people from playing it at all.
