Forums - Nintendo - So, megaflop GTA: CW for DS reached 1M

The games currently $15 on Amazon, somehow I don't see this game being a big revenue source for Rockstar.

Oh, and also, your point about GTA 4 having less content but outselling previous games only reinforces my point about fans of graphics who buy GTA games.

So here is a question to all those who call this a failure:

WHY DID YOU NOT BUY THIS GTA GAME?

Lets bear in mind GTA:CW is very different experience from GTA4. The masses just don't care for the top down GTA games. Its not like GTA1 and GTA2 took the world by storm.

C.O.P. was quite impressive for the DS. If they made something similar to that with the GTA IP, it would be far more successful than GTA:CW. Assuming they make a good game.

GTA4 had less content than previous games, but the new game engine itself made it a more enjoyable game for me. Even if its not as great as the previous games, it's still pretty damn fun.

Super Mario World for example is my favorite Mario game of all time. But does that mean I should avoid newer Mario games as well? Ofcourse not. Ultimately, as long as they are enjoyable who cares if they are better?

Well, you're pretty much in my line of thinking: GTA:CW is a very different experience from what players of GTA3 and after are used to. It's also on a platform that most of them denounce as "kiddy", so they don't buy the platform.

The Super Mario World example is also in my line of thought, but flip the concept. We're talking about people who would be used to only games like Super Mario Galaxy, being sold Super Mario World on X-box.

My guess is that it would struggle to hit 1 million, at 30 dollars.

And for the person who wonders about how Take2 fares from games being sold on amazon for 15 dollars, well, they have already been paid their share of the money. It's the retailers who take the loss when they drop the price on a game, not the developer.

Oh, and I'm still wanting to know why GTA fans, who say this is a failure, didn't buy the game?

I got confused by this. Are you saying Super Mario World would struggle to sell a million at $30 on the Xbox?

It's still 8 Million units of top-down GTA's. Of which we know GTA and GTA2 will have been the biggest sellers. likely 2/3 Million between them... Probably making VGC figures bang on the mark (with PC included).

The remaining 3 Million units would have been the 2 expansions, and whatever the GB games did.

Makes more than enough sense to me.

Except it doesn't.  Your point completly disapears now.  Your saying the GTA numbers are right with the PC numbers included.  So it's about 1 million per console.

Not to mention there was a dreamcast version of GTA2, and those handheld releases were in fact GTA 1 &2.  Also the compilation pack for the PS1.

Either way by the numbers... espeically if you we go by YOUR numbers that give the PS1 releases such high numbers.... your average mean for sales of a GTA top down game are WELL below 1 million.  The PSP is a success by comparison.

My point doesn't disappear at all, as you are just averaging between the systems they were on. It's VERY, VERY unlikely the DC or GB versions sold even half as well as the PC or PSone versions. You know this...

Anyway, this has dragged on for long enough and i've even had hate mail... The simple fact is, it has sold subpar for a GTA game. Fact. You can't argue this. The following quote puts it perfectly...

"GTA 3 -11 million

GTA VC -14 million

GTA SA -20 million

GTA IV -13 million

GTA CW -1 million....

......on the best selling system ever. Yeah it's not a flop at all."

Now, i need to go play some CoD

That's just silly though.  It's like saying Final Fantasy tactics sold poorly for a Final Fantasy game.

You are asking gamers who enjoy GTA, to accept that a game that looks like this:

Now, many Nintendo fans are willing to step back and play games that have retro looks. But you Sony and Microsoft "hardcore" do nothing but talk about graphics all day. Then when a GTA game comes to a platform that 1) has never had GTA, and 2) has gamers who are more open-minded to new, or even retro, experiences comes out and doesn't sell insane numbers AS FAST as the previous games you cry that the game is a failure because it hasn't posted 6 million in sales.

Again, I ask you in all seriousness: Do you believe that if Halo appeared on ANY PLATFORM HANDHELD other than ZUNE, and looked akin to the image created, that Halo fans are going to go out and buy both the game and platform that they don't support? Do you really believe that Halo Warz would sell the same, or even 2/3's of the same numbers as Halo 3?

Using Halo as an example is stupid. It's a MS owned IP and would appear on either 360, Zune or Xbox Live. Nothing else.

1. Zune has nowhere NEAR the install base of DS. Although a Halo game would move a lot of Zune's, due to the Halo faithful.

2. On Xbox Live, it would break 1 Million easily, proably within a Month. The Halo crowd would eat it up straight away, just like they did with ODST and Halo Wars (The best selling RTS on consoles).

3. If it WAS on something other than any of the above. And was on, for example, PSP... It would still sell quite well due to the demographics of the platform. Probably 2-3 Million.

But, your last paragraph has me thinking... Do you think that GTA should stay away from DS and/or Wii? Due to the audience being on the HD consoles?

Using Halo isn't stupid, it's the POINT. It's an IP that has only appeared on a certain console, and would be taking a leap to consoles of different brands.

And Xbox live is out of this arguement. You're talking about something that suddenly would go from costing 30 dollars retail, to about 10. Please.

Your 3rd point is right on: ON THE PSP THE GTA FRANCHISE WOULD SELL TO IT'S DEMOGRAPHICS, being 14-20 year old boys who don't appreciate retro gaming, or a myriad of other game types that appear on the DS. Something I've already said before, but was mocked about. The DS has a different market, and A HUGE VARIETY OF GAMES TO CHOOSE FROM. If you own a PSP, you don't have that variety, probably aren't looking for it, and would die to have a GTA portable game.

DS owners look at it, and figure they'll give it a chance later. After they buy all the other games they want.

Thank you for helping me argue against you. :)

Wasn't Halo DS actually almost a reality but it got pulled last minute?

the game didn't failed gta 2 and gta 1 didn't do much better

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Yes a good game on both ds and psp.

This had long legs.
