Last gen 2 out of 3 systems made money.
This gen 1 out of 3 systems made money and many more devs went out of business.

We call this progress?

Last gen didn't go through a recession. The three big consoles this gen did and it barely effected the sales numbers (Profit is a different story, but over time that'll be a thing of the past). And if anything some of the devs that went out of business was probably for the best, only the big high quality companies should be around, it was getting to crowed, theres less shovelware now.

(Although it did suck to see Ensemble Studios go, but still sales must of been bad if they went out of business, it was probably for the best.)

And what I really meant by progress is software and hardware sales, it's a big improvement from other gens.

The fact that the sales didn't drop show why the recession isn't a valid excuse.

Actually, though everyone is saying financially Nintendo is the only one making a profit, those specific divisions for Microsoft and Sony are profiting as well due to software. A hit on hardware sales, but the software sales definitely make up for that.

Wasn't it 2 out 4 made money last generation? The Dreamcast was the biggest loser that generation after-all.

Oops, forgot about the DC.  Sorry about that.  But yeah, 2 out of 4 is better than 1 out of 3.

Nope they don't make it up for that. Let's put it this way: God of war would have to sell 100,000,000 copies to make up for Sony's loss in the hardware business. It's that bad.

well I don't think we'll see sony or microsoft droping out of hardware last gen we lost sega and either one or two before that we lost atari.  It's easy to say the made mony after the fact.  It's to early to say if sony or microsoft won't make money by the generation end.  We might have more devs going out of buisiness but arent' there still more devs in general?

  • This generation 2 of 3 cannot really be called a success from a financial point of view.
  • This generation 2 of 3 cannot really be called a success from a hardware point of view as both the 360 and PS3s crap themselves too much.
  • YEAH, PS3 failure rate (10%), wii (2.7%), x360 (23%).
  • This generation 3 of 3 can be called a success from a gamers perspective as the widest market ever can be satisfied with the offerings on the market and they are more differentiated than last generation by a significant degree, you can thank the Wii for this mostly.

To even lump the PS3 and x360 together in terms of HW failure is crazy.

That's like saying the US and Haiti are equal military powers because both armies have machine guns... but you being you you probably would.

The rest of your post I agree with.

Sony and MS have lost money overall on the PS3 and 360, so they have yet to see any success

recessions are an excuse of weak companies

This is the first gen that most people feel inclined to own all consoles. :)

And buddy I am never doing this again.

Ditto. In fact I might only buy one console next gen, probably whichever gets the best MMOs. Not likely a nintendo console thats for sure.

Console get MMO?

A Pokémon MMO has the potential to rape WoW.

PS3 and Xbox 360 flopped badly. Both lost money.

This gen is actually worse than last gen because 2 out 3 consoles lost money, while last gen only the Xbox didn't make profit (and that's out of 3 consoles, 4 if you count Dreamcast).
