people should stop defending Wii's poorer attach raio. it's to be expected--it's obvious that the "blue ocean" consumers would not spend as much as the "red ocean" ones. indeed, looking at just the ratio is misleading--if you're selling the same number of software units, you would like to move as many hardware as possible, which means the ratio would naturally be lower.

this ratio should, however, improve as nintendo starts rolling out "blue ocean" games, such as WiiFit, and more important, as ps2 gamers migrate to the Wii (at the moment though, it seems like this group is moving to the 360). time will tell if Wii is the true successor to ps2 or a toy almost in a separate category than the 360.

EDIT: people should neither compare opening week sales of Galaxy to Halo nor say it bombed.  it's a big game.  it did what it's projected to do.  nothing more, nothing less.  everybody knows it'll have ridiculous legs.

the Wii is an epidemic.

1) attach rate is higher for cosoles that have been out longer and have more games.
2) had Wii sports not been bundled and Wii play not been included from the start, do you really think people would not have picked up a game with the Wii.
3) 360 has recently had 2 games bundled to it's most popular SKU (please correct me if i am wrong but i thought marvel and forza were for the 360 premium) which have increased recent weeks sales by 300k+ too.
4) although you state it, you seem to all but dismiss the fact that the Wii still doesn't have the same install base.... I am quite sure that any failed 360s don't add up to mean fewer active than Wiis.
5) your argument of people buying two 360s works just as well if not better for Wii, because it is cheaper, and as it is such a family console there are probably a good number of houses with one in the living room and one in some kids bedroom, meaning for the most part they only need one game for each console

 1. Total console attach rate. I am speaking from a single game basis. A console that has been out for a long time, does NOT have good attach ratio's. A great example, is PS2. GTA, the best selling game on the console. Only had a 10% attach ratio. Wii Sports has a 100% attach ratio. Halo3 has about a 30-40% attach ratio.

An example. In North America, Mario had about a 10% attach ratio on first week. Halo3 had a about 25% attach ratio on it's first week. The older the console, the harder it is to get those numbers up. My other point on sales, is why do games like Assassins Creed, ALMOST sell as well as the #1 game of the year for the Wii?

 2. I think they would have picked up a game, but it would have been a game you can buy, a game with a full budget, a real game. Not a mini-mini-game collection.

3. Your right, but do their sales account for 300,000 weekly?

4. Considering the number of Wiis still in action, And the number of 360's not in action, I would still have to give the Win to the Wii for total number of consoles active.

5.  How many people Will wait in line for consoles, to have multiple consoles in their house? Wait in line multiple times, for the same thing. I dont know many people willing to do that, and in all honesty, I cant even think of many people on here who would do that. I have 2 PS3s, but that is for networking them together and playing games together, not to have one in the bedroom. Overall, with the demand for the Wii, I just dont see how there could be a signifagnt % of people with more than one. I would also like to point out that the people who would be buying more than one, would also probibally be buying games. And I mean alot of games. Moral of the story, if you have more than 1 of the same console, your gonna be buying alot of games for it too.

To sum your responce up.

Kwaad there's a major flaw in your thinking. Attach rate is nowhere's near as important to Nintendo as it is is Microsoft and Sony. Why? The Wii sells at a profit. Nintendo could sell 150m Wiis and no games and still be more profitable than Microsoft will ever be this generation.

Also lower sales of 'real games' is a reality of Nintendo's Blue Ocean strategy. They said from the get-go they would not be pulled into a disasterous fight for core-gamers with the other two (I'm sure Sony in hindsight wished it hadn't either, and Microsoft has openly stated it needs to appeal to more casuals). The Wii is getting more female and mature gamers than any system previously except DS. These owners are not that interested in 'real' games.

That's not bad, there's ample room for both on DS & Wii but the 360 is pure 'core' gamers and it shows in game sales. But look at sales of Nintendogs and Brain Age. Casual gamers DO indeed buy games.

Also, 360 games tend to do gang-busters out the door and drop quickly, were-as Wii games tend to sell fewer at first by have longer, stronger legs. So comparing 1 weeks sales is silly. SMG will consistantly sell well through-out this generation. So will Halo 3 for that matter, I doubt SMG will ever catch it, and I doubt it will ever matter.

I would just like to point out. Nintendo appears to have a 'higher' attach ratio. But when you dont count The 'Wii' Titles, of Sports, and Play. The picture gets a little bit uglier. I would also like to point out, that nintendo just released the most anticipated game for the console, since release, AND planned for the next 2 years. What do I mean by that? This mario game was the game everyone was waiting for when they first got their Wii. This is the game that wont be beat for years. This is the most anticipated game for the console in the near future. Mario is to Nintendo as Halo is to Microsoft.

Halo3 Outsold Mario by over 3TIMES on the first week. Considering the number of consoles still in use, I have to give credit to nintendo. I am 100% positive, they have more consoles in use than Microsoft. Yet, somehow, Microsoft can still outsell Nintendo in games, every week. Even the week of the biggest release of the console, Nintendo cant pass microsoft. I hate to say this. I love my PS3, and I dont have a 360. I hate microsoft, probibally more than any of you. Sub 1million sales for Mario is not good. It's horrible. Why are people not buying games? After Week 1. Mario has an attach ratio of about 15%. (I didnt do the math, it's not exact) halo after week one had an attach ratio of 50%... to a console, DOUBLE the age. (that means it is MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH harder to get the high attach ratios)

Kwaad, you've missed the forest for the trees, you're arguing Nintendo's performance in the old market , which is dying, while Nintendo is out exploring the new markets its disruption strategy has birthed, look at the big sellers of games like Mario party, Wii sports, Wii Play and the such

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Wrong, if a console is out for a long time and sells mediocrely and at the same time more games come out it only makes sense that the attach ratio will grow. PS2 is a poor example because it sold like hotcakes. But 360 is selling great software and good hardware and on the other hand Wii sales great software and fantastic hardware, X360 has (for example) 500 games and Wii has 200, which one has more chance to sell most software and achieve better attach ratio?

Kwaad: Yeah, we all know that the Wii gets a 150k boost from bundled software each week, like the xbox gets a 300k boost from bundled software each week.

At the same time, we know that both platforms are DESTROYING the ps3 in terms of software sales. You are not telling nothing new here.

I'm glad that you understand how badly the ps3 is selling, both hardware and software.

SSBB, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, etc..??? You seem to have forgotten some of the other extremely highly anticipated titles.

More than that you spend a large amount of time focusing on first year software sales of the Wii in comparison to second year software sales of the 360. People love to make this comparison because it is about the only way to put the Wii in a bad light right now. If this comparison holds up as the Wii moves into the middle of its second year then you have a valid comparison, but right now it is just stretching for it.

SSBB < Mario
Mario Kart Wii < Zelda
Wii Fit = WTF no-oneknows.

My point isnt how nintendo sucks, and the games are bad. Find one place in that thread I said nintendo sucks. I am just saying, people are buying consoles, and no games. I have been saying that for the last year. It's still the same way. It's just grandma, buys the Wii becuase everyone says it's so much fun. And then she never buys a game.

Nice way to manuplate it. Next time pick a worse mario to compare it to.

Mario Sunshine is the worst mario ever, and sold the same way. How many did Mario64, sell?

If SSB < Mario and Mario Kart < Zelda it shouldn't be possible for Mario to be outsold by Smash Bros or for Zelda to be outsold by Mario Kart .... The simple fact is that in recent history these have been Nintendo's 2 biggest sellers, it really doesn't matter how one performed that was released over 10 years ago.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeNintendo1.464.082.067.60

Overall as we see, Mario 64, was the best seller of the 64 years, by a decent margin. Even the best game of ALL TIME, was the 3rd best seller in this list. My point here, is Mario, is the biggest contendor.

Gamerace - Sony/Microsoft will win this generation AGIAN, if NIntendo dont get games. Truely, the money comes from game sales, NOT console sales. Sony makes 5$ for every game sold (roughly) same with microsoft. Here is my point. When Nintendo bombs down to 0 games sales, people will stop buying the consoles, when people stop buying games and consoles agian, nintendo stops making money. While sony, and microsoft who loose money on their consoles initally, make it all back 20fold.

I hate to say it, but blue ocean already looks like a failure to me. Nintendo is winning, they are makeing ALOT of money. But no-one else can touch the Wii, and make good money.

Wii 3rd party has been going down hill, and my point is, Wii 1st party, isnt growing NEAR as fast as I would have thought it would have.

Not really, with almost all 3rd party developers complaining about the AWFUL ps3 software sales, and everyone praising their strong Wii profits.

However you would need to know something about videogames to understand this.

"Wii are legion, for Wii are many"

I think some of the Wii fans are right. Attach ratios don't matter. Nintendo makes a raping off of the Wii (probably close to $100 USD profit a unit by now in the US). They could care less about how anyone else does when they're selling millions of units a month, and 80% of their software sales are marked with an "N" on it.

But you must have to admit: selling 750k for one game in one week is great for the Wii. It's never remotely had that sort of huge sales since Zelda: TP. Tons of supposed uber-selling Wii games never materialized for high sales outside of Mario Party 8's shocking first week. So it's great to see that 750k highly intelligent people bought the game.

But I guess what's even more shocking is that despite moving so many units, they still didn't sell as much units as the X360 did for software.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
