Yeah, but why not just allow us to save then? God of War does have a checkpoint system, but if you quit at a checkpoint and don't save, you have to go back to your last save (or at least you do in God of War 2). Why not just do what the good thing is and let us continue from the last checkpoint? As for you RPG people, why would you prefer a save point system rather than something like Mass Effect where you can save anytime? |
It depends. With save points, you can set it up so that save points serve as a safe spot and heal zone, so that you don't save in the middle of an area and put yourself in an unwinnable situation and have to start the whole game over.
Think the dungeons in Final Fantasy 6. Their save points were places to use tents, and also places to take a break. They were good in that game, yeah? Well-designed, well-implemented?
hate em. I like being able to save whenever you want. So much easier.

No they don't. Not if done correctly. Dragon Age is a good example. The game auto saves, has four slots for it to be more exact, but allows you to save pretty much anywhere (as long as there aren't any mobs in the area). So if you don't like the auto save you can load up your last save. |
Well, I don't have objections to a game having both options, in that case auto-save is a nice convenience in case of unexpected deaths.
I'm also all for being able to save wherever. Though I don't usually mind having to redo stuff a bit, a bit being key since I wan't happy at all with the save points in Star Ocean (it starts getting ridiculous when you can only do endgame during the weekend).
Also my main problem with a lot of the handhelds RPGs, and especially converted PS1 games on the PSP.
Save points add to the challange of the game, however, the main problem with checlpoints is that they don't allow you to quit whenever you want.
Games with checkpoints need to implement a system that allows you to quit the game whenever you want and than return to that exact spot when you come back to the game, that way the challange remains and you can stop playing whenever you want.
Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

I don't know if I ever dug myself in such a deep hole in a FF game that I couldn't get myself out of. The only time I've ever done something like that was Saga Frontier which was a save point game.
And even with the healing thing, doesn't FFXIII auto heal you after battles?
Also, that's good to hear that God of War 3 allows you to start the game from your last checkpoint. That has been one of my gripes about the first two games I'm glad they fixed.

You didn't answer the question.
And yeah, having a hard drive will do that for you.

Whoops, sorry, meant to just skipped my mind. >_>
I think they were about as well implented as they could be. The ones where save points are used as rest areas and you can save on world maps are about the best ones out there I think but I'd still rather have something different.
I don't really think a save anytime system would work in FFVI but FFVI also wasn't really designed for that.
Also, I totally forgot about considering hard drives. That totally makes sense and feel silly for not thinking of that.

Yeah. Bioware seems to have a good handle on the save situation. ME2 goes a step further. If you can restart the last mission from the beginning after completion. It's come in handy for me, especially when i didn't like the choices I made.
