Sony didn't copy the idea of motion controls from Nintendo, however they did copy the design of the Wii remote. That can't be denied.

I think it is fair to say it must of been. I am not so sure if we should consider this a bad thing and I am also pretty sure you could argue the same for the 360 and Natal.

We may of had other innovative motion tech in the past but Wii put it on the map and I think we all draw our motion understanding from them so their influence is massive in this sector.

They are now about to be overtaken by both Sony and Microsoft in relation to technologies used but the influence wielded does not diminish.

Oh and by the way the Wii is a fad (I did actually believe that though).

I'm not voting, because as I see it, it could be both. Obviously if Nintendo hadn't done the Wii, the exact thing that is today the Move and the support it's getting would have been different, but I don't know if it would be enough to warrant a 'yes'.

My thoughts exactly. I think anyone who is voting is pretty silly. And before your comment I saw 2 or 3 "anyone who thinks otherwies is a fanboy" comments... god I hate to see the other 10 pages remaining.\

it is diffidently somewhere in the middle ground especially as Sony themselves give some credit to the Wii at the GDC (they wouldn't have mentioned the Wii if there wasn't some connection). as a lot of people have already said the finally design features are based on the Wii mote, and the sub controller was apparently added because developers wanted a nunchuck but the majority of the tech is original patents and demonstration before the Wii was even announced prove that.

the middle ground is most likely to be were the truth is it isn't yes and it isn't no. imo.

QFT!

Sony may have been working on motion controls before the Wii's release, but did we see a picture of their controller via patent before Nintendo's wiimote?

Just because they were working on motion controls doesn't mean they were working on a remote that looks just like Nintendo's.

100% inspired/copied the Wii.

Anyone who doesn't think this is in denial. And judging by the current poll results, that's 11 of you.

I said "no" only because the tech is different and because the controllers have been in development since the days of the eyetoy.

...

This is a common misconception. The orb was shown in development since the days of the Eyetoy, not the actual controller.

Those of you who are asking "how else could they have done it?" don't have imaginations. Before the Wiimote was announced, nobody would have guessed that Nintendo would have departed from the norms so drastically; a lot of people said "how else can they do it?" And now, it seems some people lack the imagination and think the Wiimote design is standard. Hah!

For what it is being used for -- yes.

The 2004 motion demo is interesting ... reminds me of MagiQuest: http://www.magiquest.com/

But it is not the same function as its current incarnation.

so you think sony developed the move entirly for one game? interesting.

It is... in part. Use of accelerometers and the use for it for anything but trivial games is never mentioned until after the wii's release.

Then there is the obvious stylistic forms.

Sony Move would of came out without the wii... but it would of been much less in function and application.

It's more based on the fact that the move involves wii technology that was never mentioned to be in consideration for use until after the wii was released and was a big hit. Also the fact that they stated in the demos themselves it was meant only for simple games that kids would love and not really be for more advanced games.

I don't deny that. What I deny is that Sony A. wouldn't have launched it and B. what form it would be in. In 2004 it very well might havebeen for the purpose of simple kids games. That could have changed in '04 '05 and '06 before the wii and its sucess was even seen. All I know for a fact is that the move was in development long before the wii.
