Well, I guess it is time to move the goalposts:
FF13 is a disappointment if it doesn't surpass FFX or FF7 in sales. I mean, it is multiplatform! SE themselves said they wanted 10 million.....

Why stop there? Why not have it sell like Wii Fit now? :P

Can't people be happy that this shows that FF wasn't as dead in public opinion as it was claimed over and over?

Well, DQIX at least may hit Wada's crazy goals (5m Japan only).  FFXIII doing 10m does look more like an impossibility.  10m was also Square's expectation for FFX btw (and it fell ~2m short).

Going multiplatform was the right decision. You can't tell me that 600k is bad.

You'd be surprised.

I've heard of several games not being multiplatform because 1 million+ was not worth the investment........

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

The question is, were those additional sales, or just a split?

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Square's main mistake is to wait so long with the announcement. Everyone that wanted the game a long time ago got a Ps3. If versus ever goes multiplatform its best to announce it soon. But if versus and FFonline don't see the Xbox its kind of pointless in making XV multiplatform since the PS3 version will dominate the Xbox version in the west once more!

I've been playing too much Pokemon this week, so I didn't even see what FFXIII was even bumped from.

Congrats to both versions for selling very well. ^_^

And now we'll see how Pokemon will do. 2 weeks with the two biggest (in the west at least) JRPG launches. Pretty cool!

600K isn't bad, but it isn't proof that being mutli was the way to go.

Examples to that are: DMC4, RE5, GTA IV. Those proved to open up a fanbase on the 360. FFXIII seems more of a taking of PS3 sales vs opening up new ones. The PS3 would have done those numbers or a tad more/less if it was exclusive. It's good all around for the franchise, no doubt. But not as much of a breakthrough as it seems.

Now if the 360 version has strong legs, I'll retract that statement.

Sorry, I just don't buy this line of reasoning. I honestly don't see PS3 FFXIII sales rising ~600k 1st week without a 360 rev.  Sure there'd be some uptake, but I've seen nothing that'd indicate it'd be anywhere near half a million.

There's the issue of "superior version" behind it all, meaning the vast majority of multiconsole owners bought the PS3 version already anyway, leaving the 360 version likely to 360 exclusive gamers.  And logically, if the majority of those 600k 360 owners wanted to the game badly enough to invest in a PS3 over it, then they'd have been more likely to invest in a PS3 now anyway to get the best version of the game.  Or more likely, they'd have already invested in a PS3 beforehand, and this isn't even factoring PS3's current supply issues (ie: ~600k PS3 sales this week is a literal impossibility anyway).  There'd obviously be some uptake on the PS3 side without a 360 version, but chances are most of those 600k 360 owners would just buy something else or keep playing Mass Effect 2.

FFXIII isn't even a first case sort of thing either for this.  When PS3 gets the better version of multiplatform games, it usually shows in the sales (Burnout Paradise for example).  You can't really draw a direct comparison to "equal" multiplatform games like DMC4/RE5 or something with an implied 360 advantage like GTA4 and conclude sales weren't "enough" to show opening up a new market.  In fact, I'd argue in cases like RE5/DMC4/GTA4, 360 was more likely to be cannibalizing sales that would've gone to a theoretical PS3 only rev than really opening up a new market.  Your logic's really kinda backwards on this one CGI...

Great numbers for an awesome Game. Played about 25 hours now, and just can't stop :D

GO FFXIII!!!

Well done Square Enix. Now everyone cannot blame SE for making X360 ver of FFXIII. 2/5 of launch week sales was from X360 ver. Japan should get X360 ver. That could add 0.4 million more sales

I think a JP 360 release could've added maybe 200-300k at launch... now though, no way.  The used market is flooded with FFXIII, with trade in prices being as low as 200 yen.  It's actually probably the fastest and most severe used turnaround for a game Japan this generation.

I do think the inevitable FFXIII International will be multiplatform in Japan though.  MS may even try to do another marketing deal to push their version.

FFXIII International is inveitable but it will not be on XBOX 360 because Microsoft did not buy any rights to release FFXIII on the XBOX 360 in Japan because they know the Japanese would not buy it on the XBOX 360 in quantity's worth the effort of the release on the system.

Doubt that.  Really, the only reason it wouldn't be on 360 would be if Sony ponied up again to nab exclusivity... and from Sony's perspective, that's probably not worth it.  They already got all the mileage they need out of FFXIII, letting it hit 360 a year later is really of no consequence to them, especially since their version of International's likely to outsell a 360 rev by 5:1 or better.

Microsoft on the other hand, I can see throwing some ad support SE's way for even a year late release.  They did it for FFXI and MoHun Frontier, and those games are even older...

But Microsoft did not pay for release rights in Japan only in NA/Europe it was a calculated Business decision that it would sell on XBOX 360 in the west but not Japan if FFXIII had been released in Japan it would have soled about 150K-200K max lifetime and been out soled 10:1 so FFXIII International will like FFXIII will most likely never be on on the XBOX 360 in Japan.
