Forums - Sony - I've tried to pretend it wasn't an issue but I have to admit it is now

If it's just size your interested in then by all means get a 5400, the ps3 doesn't take advantage of the 7200, that's why you see nominal speed increase but in my opinion the cache makes a bigger difference.

As for the heat issues, its a fallacy, it may have been true years ago but *the newer 7200 run cooler than some older 5400, I've had mine for nearly 2 years and haven't had a single issue.

I never said a thing about heat. The power consomtion by the hdd rises which in my case over a three month period screwed the power unit (OK yes, creating heat) creating Ylod. Sure go ahead if you wish but from my experience i wouldnt.

*Got to call you out on that though. hmm

After downloading a shit load of stuff from psn and getting playtv, I no longer have any space left on my 80gb HD so I need to upgrade. What drives would people recommend and what's the best way to exchange it?

How much would I need to spend on this? I have a budget of £50 (give or take).

I can't believe people donload and save this much stuff. I've never run out of space. I have a 60gb HD and it never gets below 30gb left. Once I'm done with a game,I usually just delete the saves. If I'm done with a psn game,I do the same thing.

You can use any 2.5 drive with the PS3 as long as its standard (those extra 3 platter 2.5 1TB drives are incompatible.)

What I would recommend is a 640GB drive like the WD Scorpio 2.5 which is only about 90 bucks US (which is around 50 pounds give or take on the exchange rate). It is REALLY easy to back up to an external drive or us a friends PS3 to transfer all your data (including "can't copy" saves) to the new drive.

I mainly suggest going with the 640 because of the play TV thing, if you are recording a lot of TV you're going to want that extra room. I tend to also move movies from my computers hard drive to the PS3 and leave them there for storage so that gives me use for the extra space too.

As to fast hard drives like 7200 or even 10000+ RPM drives and SSDs they all increase the speed of the PS3, especially when loading games that have an install, but they're not usually worth it unless saving 5-10 seconds every hour or so really matters that much to you.

I do buy a bunch of games, but I just play and beat them and trade them in for new games. I'll keep the call of duty games longer, but that's about it.

oh not trading in games to gamestop....ever heard that saying "the path to hell is paved with good intentions"?

If you're dealing with the gamestop used game gestapo you might as well just go pick the pockets of developers directly and hand that cash over to gamestop, it's more or less teh same thing.

That's what I have, good size and good price

I always keep my games unless they require a 5gb install, not to mention playtv stuff which are stealthily long but I try to watch them asap so I can delete them but at the same time...it all adds up pretty quickly, that 80gb goes quickly.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

I've been using a 7.200 hard drive since 2008 and here I am, no overheating issues.

£50 is plenty for the hard drive itself. Should get you around 250GB.

But you'll need an external hard drive large enough to back it up. Not sure about the cost of that.
