If true, I think this pretty much puts Sony in last for the rest of this gen.

No it doesn't. The 360 arcade is already $100 cheaper and is getting its ass kicked weekly. What makes you think an extra $50 cheaper will make the difference?

You aren't considering the many who want the console with a hard drive. A $50 price cut will be a definite deal breaker. Also, the update that allows USB stick support will make the Arcade models more desireable.

Okay as for the USB thing, I have no idea what that means and I'd consider myself fairly informed about gaming related things; so I doubt the average gamer (casual gamer or whatever) will know either so that won't make a difference.

And yeah I'm not saying a $50 drop won't help but I don't think it's gonna skyrocket 360 above PS3. $200 (current price) is very affordable already so I don't think too many people who want an Xbox 360 were waiting for it to drop lower than $200. Its not like the PS3 which went from an expensive $400 to a fairly affordable $300 when they did the slim.

So yeah it'll help and the 360 will probably go back to dominating in North America (its pretty close right now) but it won't stop the PS3 IMO.

The next update is going to allow the use of USB memory sticks up to 16GB. That means you can save game data, DLC, demos, XBLA games, Games on Demand, and even install 360 games onto a standard USB stick. Therefore the Xbox 360 hard drives are no longer essential for people that want to download. This means Arcade won't be gimped anymore.

Not everyone wants the $199 model. Every 360 owner I know has a 360 with the hard drive. So a $50 price cut on both models will be a definite edge over the PS3 and Wii.

They don't need to stop the PS3. Sony is already stuggling to keep the PS3 alive. The 360 is doing great and another price cut should widen the gap.

When the 360 goes below $199 its a signal that the generation is coming to an end.

But usually when that happens a console is struggling. This is clearly an exception because the 360 still has a lot of life left in it and console sales are still great at the current price. Its not the end, its just competition between three strong competitors.

Well that and making a profit. Both are difficult for Sony.

While I agree with your prices for the base models, Natal won't be $100.

Recently MS mentioned that they removed the logic chip from the Natal system and instead they are using the 360s chips to help out. That was most definitely to reduce costs. I bet Natal is closer to $60 standalone so I bet it will be packaged w/ 360's at $50 more than their base prices.

It mostly depends on how much it costs Microsoft for an Xbox 360 Slim and how much it costs for the camera oh and how much of a margin (positive/negative) they are willing to take.

There are also some other factors like royalty payments. If for instance they drop DVD playback/backwards compatibility they'd probably save about $10 per HDD equiped unit and $5 for the Arcades from that. On top of that it also depends on what agreements they made with IBM/ATI as far as how royalties would scale over time which we cannot truely know and noone would care to leak.

Overall the Slim drops 1 or 2 of the CPU chips and consolodates them, has a much simpler board layout and likely fewer layers and will probably have a much simpler PSU as well as a cheaper case and a smaller box to ship. It all adds up pretty good actually.

That was so deadpan. I love it.

Sony struggling? Na, they consistantly outsell MS by $50,000 units a week. But MS is doing the right thing. Their are scared, and bundling everything, FFXIII, Halo3, etc. They are doing everything in their power to keep Sony from widening the 50,000 weekly greater sales. Sony on the other hand is doing nothing, no bundles, no Blockbuster bundles, no extra controlers, ..... just a PS3.

Where did anyone say Sony was struggling?

I really enjoy how a thread on a 360 rumor has turned into another succesful "Sony is still better" thread here at VGChartz!

isnt the new ps3 slim sku thats coming out in sometime in march that weights 200 grams less suppose to be make the ps3 profitable for them?

ps3 is making the gap less and less every week since the slim has been out and the new approach they have taken. I dont get what gap you are talking about but the gap i see is shrinking slowly and slowly.
