What are you even trying to argue here? That FF isn't as big in the west as it used to be? We don't have any numbers to support that. So what is the point of this thread? |
Exactly
The series will prevail!!

FPSs/gorefests/brutal action are the only things that people in the 14-34 demographic play this gen anyways.
At my school, there is a policy between guys that they do not play "Asian-made" games. I'm the only one that does. And NOTHING from last gen except Halo 2 is ever played.
Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. " thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."
that is pretty crazy. Pretty soon RPG's will start selling more in Japan than shooters.

What makes you think I'm trying to argue anything? I'm trying to discuss.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

All it means is Final Fantasy is not a HUGE game outside of Japan. Just like Battlefield 2 is not a HUGE game in Japan.
Being two different genres makes no difference. Fable 2 sold over 1m in it's first week. I bet Fallout 3's figures were close to that as were games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. Meaning RPG games can sell well outside of Japan.
My opinion is we as a community hype games to an unbelievable level. When in reality the vast majority of gamers out there who won these consoles could not give a monkies for those franchises. I believe outside of Japan Final Fantasy is one of those games.
More people are interested in blowing stuff up then playing a story driven game. That to me is the way it has always been.

Except it was, especially in the PS1 days.

Sarcastic agreement fails when it's not a point we are making here.

Err...No? How can a title that sells more or less 3 million copies outside of Japan consistently not be considered huge?
| LordTheNightKnight said: "Final Fantasy simply is the biggest JRPG franchise in the West that isn't pokemon (which is really hard to classify as a JRPG or WRPG since it lacks a lot of the distinct characteristics of both)" Doesn't it sell better than even western RPGs? I mean, the bestselling I can think of are Oblivion and Fallout 3, but if I missed some, please let me know. As for all the comments, it seems the general idea is this showing how much the FPS market has grown this generation, while the RPG market isn't that hot right now. |
Depends on the genre of RPG. If we're taking mmorpgs into account wow has sold more then any Final Fantasy ever released. Diablo 2 had sold 4 million by 2001 and we all know Blizzard games have great legs so its sales (this is speculation) would probably be challening FF sales by now. But yes unless we're taking a game like Oblivion (which sells well on many platforms) into account then yes FF outside of Pokemon sells better then most Western RPGs worldwide. Though this wont last forever as the WRPG genre is selling better and better seemingly each year. Diablo 3 for example should be absolutely massive and probably do better then 2 did.
