All it means is Final Fantasy is not a HUGE game outside of Japan. Just like Battlefield 2 is not a HUGE game in Japan.
Being two different genres makes no difference. Fable 2 sold over 1m in it's first week. I bet Fallout 3's figures were close to that as were games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. Meaning RPG games can sell well outside of Japan.
My opinion is we as a community hype games to an unbelievable level. When in reality the vast majority of gamers out there who won these consoles could not give a monkies for those franchises. I believe outside of Japan Final Fantasy is one of those games.
More people are interested in blowing stuff up then playing a story driven game. That to me is the way it has always been.
