Forums - Gaming - are jrpgs dying?

I'm not counting pokemon/final fantasy because that'll be around forever.

I'm talking lower budget/New JRPGs, they are not selling well this gen at alll. The only exception is Lost oddyessy (Which BTW didn't sell so hot).

Now my question is will japaneese companies invest in more modern action/western RPGs rather than JRPGs (It seems that is selling the best this gen)? It seems that wrpgs have taken over jrpgs this gen...agree disagree post your thoughs.

On consoles, yes. Games like Final Fantasy are actually to blame since they raise the bar impossibly high.

Dying? No, I don't think so, but they are changing slowly like the FPS genre has over the last decade or so. They'll become more mainstream and simplified I think.

if that was the case id play jrpgs a lot more :p i think they're way too hard. (except pokemon)

They're falling into a niche due to a lack of quality/growth.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Actually I think its more fo a fact that WRPG's are selling so much more than your "random " JRPG that it makes JRPG sales look "horrible" when they aren't that bad.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

yup and am glad they are

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

no i dont think they are dieing, Star Ocean 4 was really good and Demon's Souls, WKC, Agarest, Valkyria (more an RTS), Resonance of Fate, Last Rebellion and thats all i know of on the PS3 not including FF.
On the X360 there was Infinite Undiscovery, Last Remnant and Lost Odyssey, however i know none of those sold very well but that might have been because they were JRPG's on the X360 and at the time they were released that was still a fairly new concept.

End of 2014 Hardware Predictions (03/03/14)

PlayStation 4: 12-15million

Xbox One: 7-10 million

Wii U: 8-9 million (Changed 01/04/2014 from 7-9 --> 8-9 million)

The top selling RPGs this generation are from Japan. The Dragon Quest series has hit new heights in the last few years in terms of sales.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

o and btw have you noticed no jrpgs have been bundled with consoles outside of the japan?
