The main reason is that racing games are not your typical online game (the north-american console market is ahead of others online-wise).

The second main reason would be that having a western console with two great complementary racing franchises, one arcadey (PGR) and the other a true sim (forza), obviously gave north americans alternatives.

Should be mentionned also that Polyphony Digital having had development issues with the fifth installment (GT5hd then Prologue then wait... wait... 2010?) has given the fans a lot of time to look elsewhere and GT5 should perform even worse than expected because of that.

- GT4 had no online, was supposed to have it.  The NA market was egerly awaiting it then it was cut and many many people said F that.

- Need for Speed was a 6 million seller, it did not hurt GT sales.

- WTF what dev issues.

Dude demo - 4.5 million.  Its not hard to figure that GT is as strong as ever.

Had GT4 had online it would have sold better in NA

Every additional racing game reduces other racing games' sales - as they are substitute products of one another

If you haven't noticed PD have regularly been unable to publish GT5 since 2006

GT5 prologue sold less than a million in the US and it came out when the PS3 portfolio was basically empty

Dude, metarankings and sales are indicating a decadent franchise in NA :

^^You broke the thread.

Americans hate all things quality. The better something is in America the more people despise it. If a car is really nice we hate it, because it is to snobby. If someone is really good in school we make them outcasts. If someone works hard at their job, other employees treat them like crap, and try to set them up to fail. Gran Turismo is made to a level of quality that most Americans can never dream of achieving. Instead of loving it for all of its perfection, they just wish it would go away, so they would not look so bad anymore.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

That is utterly foolish to say. Americans love quality, which is why they buy outside of the country so much. You should be blaming American corporations for putting out such low quality goods and subjecting their goods to Americans and making us feel bad if we dont buy half assed goods. Now at least they are starting to pick up the pace with value after the economy hit a recession. You have a false understanding of what Americans think and how we live. GT5 may be a quality racing game, but it is a redundant yet beautiful race car game.

It should do around 3 - 4 Million in the US.

Who's the best Pac, Nas, and Big. Just leave it to that.

@S.T.A.G.E.

Mabye things are better were you live, but here in Washington thats all I see. People build crap quality goods, and provide disgraceful services. Some complain about it, but most just let it slide, and say oh its just this or that. That is what I see from my fellow Americans every day.

Sorry that this is a little off topic, but it from my point of view this is a very logical awnswer.
