The main reason is that racing games are not your typical online game (the north-american console market is ahead of others online-wise).

The second main reason would be that having a western console with two great complementary racing franchises, one arcadey (PGR) and the other a true sim (forza), obviously gave north americans alternatives.

Should be mentionned also that Polyphony Digital having had development issues with the fifth installment (GT5hd then Prologue then wait... wait... 2010?) has given the fans a lot of time to look elsewhere and GT5 should perform even worse than expected because of that.

- GT4 had no online, was supposed to have it.  The NA market was egerly awaiting it then it was cut and many many people said F that.

- Need for Speed was a 6 million seller, it did not hurt GT sales.

- WTF what dev issues.

Dude demo - 4.5 million.  Its not hard to figure that GT is as strong as ever.

Had GT4 had online it would have sold better in NA

Every additional racing game reduces other racing games' sales - as they are substitute products of one another

If you haven't noticed PD have regularly been unable to publish GT5 since 2006

GT5 prologue sold less than a million in the US and it came out when the PS3 portfolio was basically empty

Dude, metarankings and sales are indicating a decadent franchise in NA :
