Fuck this kiddy casual games like that! A game as user friendly as that one needs to be on the GBA.

2 out of 10 ? Thats the lowest I've seen IGN give a game in a long time.
I'm sorry you got aggravated at that area. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP. That is literally the most aggravating part of the game, and after that, its much easier sailing.
Some things you need to know:
1. There are very few infinite spawner points. That is the worst one in the game. Don't worry about them. Just run past them in that area....Get to the raincoat guy and past him ASAP.
2. That QTE event is the same every time. If you can tap the required (first) button, you will not need a second QTE press. The second 'move the stick left and right' is a last-ditch saving throw. That never changes, regardless of playthrough.
3. If you hate the infinite spawns, press and hold left trigger when you do not have your gun out. You will hold your breath, which makes the enemies dossile, and will not attack you. This is limited, but will get you past the enemies.
4. Don't give up. Trust me when I say that once you get past the raincoat killer QTE, you'll be in for the game of your life. As soon as you get past him, you walk 5 feet and end that area, and get to the 'real' game.
5. When you failed the QTE, it didn't take you back too far. It should have taken you back to the fenced in area....You can litterally get back to the raincoat killer QTE in 15 seconds by simply running past all the enemies. Finish the QTE first, then go back for items if you feel you need them. However, its just cash-based stuff that you can easily get a little later. The real length is from when you restart from the save....Please give the game a second chance. You will thank me, I promise.
I will equate your fusterations like this:
'I can't figure out how to get through the Millennium Fair on Chrono Trigger! This game can't be good, I'm leaving it!'
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Yeah, I played the Heavy Rain demo and simply hated the game due to its controls. Seemed to be a game only build around QTEs. |
Well, it isn't.
| twesterm said: I think I'm through with this game and I've barely even started it. First off, I'm a giant pussy when it comes to scary things. I like them, but I'm still a pussy. Deadly Premonition has done a great job at making me nervous, part of that is because it did a good job at making those backwards walking things scary and second the controls are so bad I'm afraid I won't be able to kill them in time. Before I go on, I quit Resident Evil 4 for mostly these same reasons. I despised the controls on the Gamecube and I couldn't get past the first village for the longest time because it just didn't occur to me to sneak around and not run up the middle. Anyways, Deadly Premonition is interesting but it pissed me off last night. I got to a point where I found an infinite enemy spawner blocking me and a path (shortly before I did the fuse box puzzle). I sat there and shot enemies for a few minutes and decided, yup, that's an infinite enemy spawner between me and where I want to go. I thought perhaps that simply getting closer to the spawner would cause them to stop since getting close to these things is bad. So I killed the enemy and booked it. I heard another enemy spawning right by and decided getting close to it wasn't going to stop it. I ran on and then saw the red barrier. Noooooo! I walked up close to it trying to put some distance between me and the enemy that just spawned and suddenly it goes into a cut scene and the enemy doesn't stop! He finally stops talking and the enemy is right on top of me and starts thwacking me with a shovel. I kill it and just run even though I hear another enemy spawning. One more enemy spawns at the other side in what I assume is another infinite spawners, I quickly kill it with a barrel, and just fucking run. I run down the path and all of sudden out of nowhere a damn quick time even happens that I of course just fail. Shit. Luckily, that doesn't appear to be game over right away and the thing with the Jawa eyes is on top of me and it tells me to shake the left stick back and forth which I do. And then I die. Fuck this game. It's cool they wanted to copy as much as they could from RE4 but why did they have to take the worst parts and then make them even worse? Quick time events out of nowhere suck but they suck even more when I do the action and I still die. And the controls are awful. I'm scared in this game because the controls are so bad I just feel helpless. I'm fine with them doing the RE4 thing but just aiming is so hard because the stick is so sensitive.! Anyways, I died, restarted, and it sent me back a good ways so I turned the game off and said fuck it. I don't think I'll be playing it again anytime soon. |
I just beat the part you were talkng about...honestly, if combat turns you off running is your best friend. As long as you are ready for a QTA and are willing to clear a few baddies before getting to the QTA to clear a path, you can run just passed the infinite spawn point.
So far I really can not express how excited I am to play this game. Its like playing Resident Evil 1 all over again but even more unpredictable...something that not many games are able to be in this cookie cutter industry.
Yes the visuals are bad, gameplay is not perfect, camera angles are...difficult at times...but so far its balanced well enough to be fun for a seasoned survival horror fan like me. And the fact I can't even imagine what WTF moment will come next makes me applaud whoever decided to bring this game to North America...and for 20 bucks too. I'd pay 50 bucks for this, easily.

Agreed!
While the QTEs do suck the game never sets you back more than a few seconds so they really shouldn't bother most people. I will admit that this very same QTE pissed me off as well after failing it a couple times. As stated the moving of the stick back and forth doesn't always register properly which is quite annoying.
Still, not to be rude, but the OP doesn't sound like he has thick enough skin for most games beyond say railshooters. I get frustrated easily, and am quite willing to quit a game that pisses me off. But struggling with the first area of RE4 with the very standard issue controls of the GC controller? Not sure what can be said. Most console games are pretty dumbed down already. Further simplification would just lead to an even less rewarding experience. I will admit though that the shooting mechanics are pretty sucky.
That said I urge him to keep going I'm about halfway through and this is easily the most frustrating place I have encountered yet.

You know Killer 7 is the same way.
The Heavens smiles are creepy as hell, and the bad controls really panic you... oddly it's a game I think would be WORSE if it had better controls.

I actually agree as well. The crappy controls keep the otherwise simple combat from being a total breeze much like the old RE games. I'm usually not a defender of tank controls, but it works here.
