I doubt they did it for the weight, most likely they combined or eliminated a few components which is where the real savings are at.

this may have something to do with the contract that is going up and they are renegotiating and/or finding new manufacturers for the slim parts.
I believe the casing manufacturer's contract goes up this month.

multiple benefits is what makes regular ideas brilliant.

Is this slimming down mantra of Sony the paving way for success or doom?

Seriously? What are they gonna call it this time? "Ps3 slimmer"? lol
"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)
"WAR is a racket. It always has been.
It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler
well i did read an article where a sony spokes person said not to call the ps3 a "slim" since it isnt. meaning although the one this thread speaks off may not be a ps3 slim, there are probably looking at making one for the future.
It will just be the first minor revision for the Slim model. All internal, same case, just like the first revision to the 40GB SKU, or the second revision to the 80GB non BC SKU.
Cheaper to produce, fewer components, a bit less to ship, hopefully a bit quieter and runs a bit cooler if they reworked the die sizes. Most consumers won't know the difference.

Yeah, Sony has never called it a Slim it has been everyone else, even the box doesn't say slim. There will be another revision, it's just when.
