Forums - Sony - Sony PS3: 3D gaming via firmware update release before Summer!

You may remember us informing you about this last month, but now we have an update from Sony, who reiterate that 3D games on the PS3 will be coming before Summer – thanks to a simple firmware update.

As reported from this article over at PC World, SCEE’s Nainan Shah reassured PS3 gamers, that they will ‘not’ require any new PS3 equipment to enjoy 3D games, as this will automatically happen via a future firmware update.

He explained: “PS3 users worldwide will only need to upgrade the PS3 system software via the internet and there is no need to repurchase the system to enjoy 3D games.”

If you didnt know already, developers are already at work on stereoscopic 3D games for Sony, with the company keen to extend their 3D ambitions to other devices too – such as Blu-ray players.

To see how 3D games will look on the PS3, head to our previous report on Little Big Planet and Gran Turismo 5 in 3D.

Dont forget that Sony are also planning to have 3D available for the upcoming Fifa World Cup -which kicks off in June, meaning that this 3D firmware update should be hitting very soon indeed.

Is there more defined specs needed for this 3D stuff?

I want to get something that will satisfy both the Nvidia 3D vision and the PS3 3D so I can just kill all the birds with one stone and have 3d accessibility on everything.

3D vision is like anything that's 120 hz or above, where an early source i read about the PS3 3D said 200Hz, which i doubt.

nothing says that 3D tv's will do at 120hz.its just that the existing tech for 3d pc gaming says that it should be atleast 120.

it will clearly determined on the tech what the refresh rate will be.

@ halil the OP said the fifa world cup is in june so ud be safe to assume that hed mean around there

Will this work with the 3D glasses you buy in UK for Real 3D and the like, does anybody know? I've taken so many different groups of kids to see various movies in 3D I have like 12 pairs of those buggers and it would be great if I can put them to use playing Super Stardust HD in 3D.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

@ reasonable)

no, those glasses used in cinemas just have polarization filters (line/circular), because in cinemas they use 2 projectors which project the different pictures with differently polarized light to create the 3D effect

first gen 3D TVs however will use the shutterglasses technique (the TV alternates between left/right eye pictures while the glasses alternate between obscuring the left/right side) , because it's easier with just one light source - shutterglasses are way more expensive than polarized glasses though

lol at lafiel, I knew they would use different glasses....
anyway on topic this is great, although i can't afford to upgrade my TV just yet, it shall have to wait a couple of years, sorry...

it's the future of handheld

A couple of questions:

1- Would a game like FIFA only be in 3D? Can I switch on/off 3D in such a game? Or will Sony be providing 2 copies of FIFA (standard copy and 3d Copy)?

2- Any idea how much a 3D TV would cost? for example a 40 inch Full HD TV?

Thanks

everybody is speaking about 120Hz because is double the normal rate of NTSC witch can produce the 3D stereoscopic effect. but in PAL regions like my country the double of normal rate is 100Hz (witch my TV is capable). so in here 100Hz is also capable to produce the 3D stereoscopic effect? right?

I'm sure the game could have an optional 3D mode and wouldn't need to be on a different copy. Especially with Blu-ray there should be more than enough space, even if they needed to include a second 3D engine for stereoscopic output (which I think is unlikely).

The new Samsung 46inch 3D LED is listed with US$2600 right now (here - afaik it's the first of the TVs that comply with the 3D standards), so I guess by this summer 40 inch 3D TVs (non-LED) could start at ~US$1500-1800

@ sergiodaly )

yes, stereoscopic 3D theoretically can work at 100Hz as well
