Forums - Website Topics - Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love

The VGchartz ads are tedious and sometimes makes my antivirus go nuts. I'm too lazy to get an adblocker, but I would never feel sorry for blocking ads.

Ads which fire off an antivirus are simply unacceptable. ioi, don't these ad networks scan their ads for viruses?

I agree with the original post.

I would never use an ad blocker on a site I want to support. Anyone who understands what it takes to keep a site like this running would do the same.

Oh and AVG is a horrible anti-virus.

AVG is by far and away the best Virus Checker I have ever used.

pb1285n obviously doesn't know how to work his computing machine properly !

The most frustrating thing about this thread is that ioi and his staff do not see or refuse to see what the major problem is.

Go read through the thread, the overwhelming majority of people are running ad block because of malicious ads on this website that cause their computers to get viruses or trojans, not because their some internet vagabond that like sticking it to the big guy.

Yet repeatedly ioi has said that the majority of users don't experience these malicious ads or that the level of threat from their ads is just the same as any other gaming website when this is so painfully not true. Just a quick read through this and many other threads shows you that these problems are affecting large numbers of the community.

I don't know what the problem is or why you can't find whats causing these ads but to blame your community for trying to protect their own personal property from harm is foolish to say the least.

Most people don't go out of their way to install ad block unless something is seriously wrong. Fix the problems people are clearly experiencing with malicious ads and people will stop using ad block and your problems are solved. Simply block people who have disabled ads without understanding the reason why and you will kill a large part of the community that keeps the forums alive and in doing so destroy one of the biggest draws to this website, the relatively level headed discussions about gaming.

If you're getting viruses from ads, it's time to stop looking at porn in IE6 with McAfee or whatever shitty anti-virus is shovelled on your comp when you bought it.

Anyhow, agreed 100% with the article in the OP.

wow talk about an ignorant post. I use google chrome with Windows 7 and AVG anti-virus, everything updated fully and total system scans run weekly.

By trying to act like a smart ass you make yourself look foolish in the process. Read the thread and you will see how stupid your generalization is. Also why should someone have to change their browser because one website constantly attacks them with malware from sketchy ads?

Maybe its time for you to get out of your moms basement and see that the world doesn't revolve around your leet PC skillz or how hard you can pwn noobs in WoW. Hey guess I can come up with stupid one dimensional stereotypes too, who would have thought.

Well, I don't live with my mom, we don't have a basement, and I never intend to play WoW, so I guess you're no better?

At any rate, if you're using an outdated version of a web browser, particularly something as archaic and security hole-ridden as IE6, then yes, it's time to update it, and as far as I'm concerned, any problems you experience are your own damn fault in the first place.

EDIT:  And with respect to VGChartz' main page, I'm sure that if you replaced both the console sales graphs and the other animation with news stories with something a little simpler and HTML/JS-based, it'd go a lot further to improve rendering times than anything ad-related would. =\

EDIT AGAIN:  Huh, according to YSlow, the page took ~2-3 seconds less to load with Flash disabled.  Guess not a huge difference, but it does help.

What this article doesn't mention is the issue of mutual respect beetween content provider and readers.

Respect on the readers part comes in form of not using ad blocking software.

Respect on the part of content provider is shown by using ads that are somehow related to the topic and ads that are not intrusive on browsing (no pop-ups, no redirects or sound ads).

Indeed, that's all I ask.  And in fact, there's also the concept of too many ads.  When I first came to this site, there was probably one or two ads on the main page, and that was it.  Over the course of a year, its grown to about 7-8 ads on the main page (depending on the type of ads), some redirect ads, and any number of ads on the forum page.  Sure, a site needs to grow, as this site has, but no forum or even major site like IGN or gamefaqs has THIS many ads.  I hate to make the analogy, but the only sites on the internet with this many ads that I can think of are porn sites and emulation sites.  Perhaps its time to tone it down a peg.

To be fair, I think the ads are much more game-related than they were before.

However I agree with you on the quantity of ads.

I thought i'd take a look without adblock running, it didn't crash or infect me like some people were saying.

See comparison. (for larger:right click>view image)

Before adblock: (8-12 seconds loading/looks like I'm in Vegas)

After adblock: (2-3 seconds loading/looks calm and professional)

It's no competition in my eyes. Maybe if the adds were toned down a bit I'd make the exception for VGChartz.

Of course not!!

Just like I'd rather listen to radio without having ads interrupt the service. I'd rather watch TV without having to stop for ads every 20 mins. I'd rather buy a magazine without having ads every 3-4 pages. Nobody LIKES advertising.

The point here is that you shouldn't have the choice as to whether you'd LIKE to view it or not - it is provided as part of the service and you have to accept it just like you do in any other medium.

Why is it so hard to understand this fundamental point? I understand adblockers from the point of view of somebody worrying about a malicious ad or wishing to protect themselves but the problem is that they have extended into this area of "I don't LIKE seeing ads so I'll just turn them off" - something which you, as a user, don't have the right to do.

If VGChartz moves to a policy where the only ads we show are 100% safe, personally-checked ads (so zero risk of malware / viruses etc) which would be a reasonable hit on revenue, but implemented a system whereby you need to either have ads unblocked to visit the site or pay to hide ads then I can't see how anybody could have an issue with this.

People go to the toilet or make tea whilst the ads are on or fast forward the ads if they have recorded the program on SKY+ or Video/DVD etc, I believe there is even some technology that cuts the ads out for you.

The internet's version of this is adblock.

And saying we have to 'accept' something looks to me like many governments around the world that enforce rules on their citizens because it's what the small majority making the desicions want and basically they are saying 'stuff what our people want and think', we think it's right.

Unfortunately for you I'm guessing the majority of poeple will voice their opinions by leaving ad block on, and you might consider that stealing and if so, call the police, I'm sure they could do with good laugh.

I personally have had so many problems in the past with warnings about this site, 'does anyone remember when it was listed in google of having malicious script?' I currenly have no intention of blocking my guard as I do not want another av.exe fake antiivus installed thank you.

As for the restaurant scenario and me going back and stealing food, I think you'll find if a restaurant had caused that many proplems to that many people, it would have been closed down by the council by now.

The problem isn't an isolated incident it occurs regularly time and time again.

I don't have all the ads blocked now. But I do have the horrific flash ones blocked. There it is my compromise ; ;
