According to this thread, I need to train hard to win the lottery... :P

lol good one, but seriously though, i disagree, MK doesnt really involve too much skill....and there is nothing wrong with that

And how many times have you actually played the game?

a good number of times, i used to be a huge fan of the 64 version, and ive played the wii version quite a bit, i love it, but i wish it was pushed farther, but either way its a great game, but what is the problem with it not relying on skill? why does it have to rely on skill anyways?...its a good game none the less and its easily accessible to anyone that likes fun racing games

Have you read a single thing that I wrote?  The game relies heavily on skill.

Is it accessible?  Yes, but in order to excel at the game it takes hours upon hours of practice.  It is easy to play but it takes a borerline maniac to master.  This is true with most good Nintendo games.

Ok, we understand your point of view, but why cant others have a different one? You say that you need skills to master it, other say different... they respect your opinion, but they have another one... why is that so hard to swalow? Just because you brought up a couple of ideas in your topic doesnt mean that everyone should agree IMO.

I hooked up my SNES some weeks ago and played Super Mario Kart.
And it's funny how much more challenging that game is.
If you are racing in the back of the field, you really don't get back in front as easily as in later Mario Karts.

The tracks are more challenging too.

I haven't played MK Wii yet.

Yes there is a difference between being able to get back into the pack (perhaps even win) in a hectic race... and not being able to catch up in a game where there is very little going on and the tracks are empty.
If you get behind the pack at the beginning of GBA Bowsers castle (a track similar to SNES ones) it is very difficult to get back in front of the main pack... never mind win.

----

The thing some people are still not getting is the difference between 1 race and many races.

As some have mentioned, people like Rol have win:loss ratios that are entirely in their favour (I believe I have the closest ratio with Rol, and it's about 240:190 in his favour) yes sometimes we miss out on winning a race, or perhaps in extreme cases will finish in the bottom half of a race, but over a number of races we will come out on top (or 2nd if Rol is there)

My win:loss ratios are all in my favour except for against Rol... and ignoring the ones that are inconclusive (less than 10 races between us) there is only 1 person who has won me more than half of what I have won them (which means for every 3 races I win at least 2 with everyone but Brawl4life [and Rol])

Mario Kart Wii involves no skill. In the GP on Friday on the Wario dirt track I was leading the whole race until the end of the last lap. Then I got hit by a blue shell. Before I could get going I was hit by two red shells. Then before I could move I was hit by someone with a start. From 1st I dropped to 8th and last when I could virtually see the finish line. Where is the skill in that with 7 people finishing ahead of me that did not deserve to based on skill?

The skill was in the person behind you who managed to send a red shell at the right time after the blue shell, and indeed considering the person had 2 red shells, the skill in passing (presumably using the other red shell) whoever was in 2nd in the same manouver. The skill is also in the fact that overall you win more than most other people.

To win a race... yes luck is required, it is required in all games, but yes more so in Mario Kart than most, however it's not huge.... and it is certainly not more in MKWii than in past Mario karts, it's just more noticable due to online and the lack of the cop-out """"skill"""" of snaking from MK:DS

Super Mario Kart doesn't have online, only has 8 opponents on screen and 2 player multiplayer so of course the difficulty is going to balanced differently. While it is probably easier to get gold on all of Mario Kart Wii's cups than in Super Mario Kart, getting 3 star ratings on Mario Kart Wii is harder.  Furthermore it is very possible to make comebacks from way back in the field (last going into the last lap to first) on every track except the Vanilla Lake ones, it just requires different skills than in Mario Kart Wii.

Brawl4life isn't that great anymore.. >.> at least based on races in late 09.

tuoyo and RCT Junkie are amazing though.

I have 9999 VR and 3 stars on my one profile but I'm sure my skill is all but lost.

Haha had to call me out huh, bastard!  But yea I admit my skills have deminished without playing as much . Only play in the leagues now a days, so if I miss it I come back rusty as hell. So whoever says this game doesn't take skill is plain WRONG.

Lol.  I am promising Nintendo today that if the next Mario Kart has blue shells and there is no option to turn it off they will not be getting any money from me for the game

I'm amazed how many people confuse "requiring some degree of luck" with "having no skill at all' This isn't like playing the lottery. Clearly the fact that some people win a statistically significant portion of races proves that luck isn't the only factor.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

This. MK is not like lottery, but more like poker. There is a degree of luck in poker, and you simply cannot win every hand. But the only people who think poker is pure luck, or even mostly luck are people who suck at it.
