I agree with the poster above, legally denying the gay community the chance to choose who they want to spend their lives with presupposes that they don't inherently deserve basic human rights.

Yeah, my church doesn't care if someone is gay. We only discriminate against Canadians the way God intended!

You do know that most gays just want equal rights. I've been dating my bf for 4 years and it would be nice to actually call it official in a state of law.

Just want to point this out, because I never liked this way of thinking.

You have equal rights. I am not gay, and I can't marry a man either. You are gay, but you can still marry a woman. Thus we both have the same rights. That makes them equal.

We just both have less rights then we should. Both of us should be allowed to legally form a union with a man, even if I never chose to exercise that right.

I bring this up, because I hate the terms "gay rights", "women's rights", "minority rights" and so on. They are human rights. We all get them.

Why does gender even have to be involved with "rights" in general? I thought these human rights were based on the people, not gender specificity.

As far as government rights in the US, they should not.

The problem is we took a religious institution, and used it to form laws. The Christian marriage is between a man and a woman. I am an atheist, but I still think it's wrong for government to tell a christian church that they have to do something there bible tells them is wrong.

So, the best way to solve it is to disconnect the religion from the law, and thus remove the emotional element from your rights. You and the person you love should be afforded the same government advantages as me and the person I love. Period. To do otherwise, is a violation. If you find my first post, you will see that I think all Marriage in the eyes of government should not matter. Not just gay marriage.

That way, you can go to the court house in any state, sign up for civil unity (just like I would have to do), and then go find a religious institution that will marry you, if you feel that's important.

The second part you and your boyfriend can still do today. The government can not stop you from being married. They just don't have to recognize it.

Another thing I am in favor of, is just removing civil unions all together. Why does marriage mean anything to government?

There are sects of Christianity that find homosexuality to be perfectly acceptable. And Christianity is really just a big scapegoat here. Heterosexual couples could meet for the first time in Vegas and get married that afternoon. Atheists and Agnostics are all allowed to get married, despite neither one of them being Christian when it comes down to it.  both of these are a bigger insult to Christianity's institution of marrriage than 2 gay guys who have known each other years getting married.

If the law passes and it's called marriage, that cool with me. The only reason I recommend changing it, is calling it that is a slap in the face to most Christians.
Just calling it something else (because in reality, it is something else) just makes more since.
Again, I think any kind of legal between two people should be eliminated. All the rights you want, should not be based on occupancy anyway. If I want to put my friend down the street on my insurance policy, why shouldn't I be allowed to? If I want to let my babysitter have all the rights my wife currently has if I am hospitalizes, why shouldn't I?
Just take all these stupid perks away because someone got married, and no one will care anymore if this church or that church marries you or not.
Marriage is a personal thing anyway, and not a government thing.

I am 100% supportive of it, I say EVERYONE on the planet should have the same rights regardless of their sexual preference, it is two consenting adults, there is NO reason AT ALL to stop them. Hopefully, as time passes people will grow out of their ignorance and come to understand that.

Yes, I wanna marry my man one day.

The UK house of lords (upper chamber) voted today to allow civil partnerships to be held in churches & religious premises. The law will amend the equality legislation so that more liberal religions can hold the ceremonies if they want to. It will not be compulsory.

I think the measure will go back to parliament for approval but it should go through quite easily.

Another step towards full equality in the UK.

I think what Mafoo means to say is that he supports a homosexuals right to marry, as long as he receives the same right, even though he is not gay or intends to marry a man. Which is fair...

Also, his wife would be hella pissed off.

OT:

Yes, I support Gay marriage. I think the government should recognise a partnership between two adults regardless of gender. Religion should have no part to play in this decision.

If a religion chooses to acknowledge gay marriage within their church, then they can do that at their own discrepancy. But they should have no choice over recognising the legality of it.

personally I think that state education is a good thing and that it should be a priority for the government, the government should endevaour to make state education as good as it can, so people get as much as is possible the same standard of education, obviously its never perfect, but if we can get anywhere close I think its good for society, I think its important that its run by the government so its accountable to the public.

Except when government education isn't accountable to good or even decent standards. Such as the case with many thousands of American schools.

then improve the system, dont give up on it

I don't think you understand the situation. A school voucher scheme isn't trying to deny the free education of any child. Quite the opposite in fact, it is trying to improve it by a great deal. All children will have the right to education and will be able to attend school for free, a school voucher will just mean they attend a privately run school of their choice who offer a higher level of education.

You will still have community schools, you will still have a national curriculum, you will still have all the advantages of state school and more.

I like to think I'm neutral enough to admit when something is a good idea, and I think school voucher systems are definitely a good idea for the USA's school system.

the death penalty - agree
the war in iraq - disagree
school vouchers - don't have a clue what they are

O/P

I voted "Yes", but that doesn't mean I'm in support of "gay marriage" per se. I believe that the state should provide equal status to all unions, no matter what genders are involved, but religious ceremonies, and the ilk, can be discriminated against at the will of the institution. If a particular church or religion doesn't support gay marriage, then, they shouldn't be forced to provide that service (after all, isn't that what a separation of church and state means, keeping out of each other's affairs (within the rule of law, of course)).

Dumbest thing I've ever heard.

You have the right to marry your life partner, a gay person does not, therefore NOT equal.

A gay man can marry his life partner today, as long as it's a woman.

My father is 71. let's say my wife died today and I was so grief stricken, that I no longer wanted a relationship with anyone. My father is getting up there in years, so I decide to live with him. After 10 years of living with him, I would call him my life partner.

Now, being we own the same house, use the same money for food, and vacations, why would it not make sense to allow me to enter a civil union with him? In the case I made, he is my father, so we get some rights there, but it could be any other man who I share enough with that we should get benefits, even if we don't have the kind of relationship you have with your partner.

The only difference between you and me, is the lack of rights we both have is far more likely to effect you, as being a gay man means your more likely to want to exercise the right we both don't have, but it does not mean your the only person who could benefit from it.

We have the same rights... we just need to fix the rights we both don't have.

100 percent yes
