A gay man can marry his life partner today, as long as it's a woman.
My father is 71. let's say my wife died today and I was so grief stricken, that I no longer wanted a relationship with anyone. My father is getting up there in years, so I decide to live with him. After 10 years of living with him, I would call him my life partner.
Now, being we own the same house, use the same money for food, and vacations, why would it not make sense to allow me to enter a civil union with him? In the case I made, he is my father, so we get some rights there, but it could be any other man who I share enough with that we should get benefits, even if we don't have the kind of relationship you have with your partner.
The only difference between you and me, is the lack of rights we both have is far more likely to effect you, as being a gay man means your more likely to want to exercise the right we both don't have, but it does not mean your the only person who could benefit from it.
We have the same rights... we just need to fix the rights we both don't have.
