Then it would have been Echo the dolphin.
Ecco makes sense as in the Eco system but changed so it looks like a name.
I supposed the echo might be the reasoning behind the name or it could work with both but it seems too easy and echo never sat right with me.

why didn't you just give the the romanization as well?

Since the Japanese "e" is pronounced "eh" ("i" is "ee"), clearly it's pronounced essentially the same way I pronounce "echo" except with a drawn-out "o" sound. 

In fact, you also say it's "eh coh", and yet you somehow think this makes it NOT pronounced the same way as "echo"?  Is this an American vs. Brit thing?

Well, aside from zexen's Japanese evidence, "eeko the dolphin" just sounds weird to me, and the ecology/ecosystyem thing seems kind of a dumb angle as far as naming him, although that's not terribly strong evidence since dumb things do get into games. 

But my strongest point is zexen's evidence.

Well if thats the Japanese pronunciation i'll go with it.
Sometimes it's best to have a foreign spelling of a word or name to tell you how it should be spoken so you don't get the confusion you do from your native tongue.

The eco-system being messed up with all the marine life being stolen appealed to me more. The "echo" was a bit too... disney for me.

Okay, though it's one of the things that's a bitch about English. Yes, it's a short e in echo, just like in echochrome, which is actually said in the demo.
