It's not for you.
More seriously, though, Kratos is a fulfillment of male power fantasies in the most literal, brutal way that the designers could come up with. If you expect anything else, you will be a sad panda.
Still, his visual design is actually pretty distinctive - compare him to Dante in EA's Dante's Inferno, and the difference in how distinctive their faces are will really jump out. Kratos is just stylized enough that nobody in the world actually looks like him, which is a neat little trick.

Being the fufillment of a male power fantasy doesn't really make you any less of a boring generic character though.
It's the same way with the main character in Prototype. The game is AMAZING for those days when you just want to mess things up and do things like grab an guy, throw him 30 feet off a building then elbowdrop a tank from 50 feet in the air.
People do give too much credit to the story and character when the power fantasies are largly reflected in gameplay and sticking giant blades through a gods chest... etc.
Basically your opinion on the game shouldn't revolve around Kratos or in general the story as it's just a way to get you to killing. Though it doesn't really change the fact that neither are that brilliantly done, except for a quick outlet into brutal killing.
