As of yesterday, we had 8 pre-orders for ps3s at my store, and 10 for Wiis.  What's amazing about that Wii figure it that we get Wii stock on a more regular basis than ps3 stock, so we're selling nearly twice as much per week and we still end up with more Wii reserves on hand at the end of the week.

how are GOW3 & FF13 doing in pre-orders at your store?

As of yesterday:

God of War - 72
God of War Ultimate Edition - 12 (we've stopped taking reserves on these, actually)
Final Fantasy PS3 - 33
Final Fantasy 360 - 11

It's funny to see how many people don't pick up games, though.  We still have 10 reserves for MAG lolz.

And yeah, I'm a total numbers whore so I check our pre-order figures like 3-4 times everytime I work.  xD

Big Ps360 gap on the FFXIII numbers, GOW looks like it'll do amazing.

so how many pre-orders do you typically need to be able to do a midnight launch?

Normally it's ~100, but there's also a policy in place where if you're down the road from a Best Buy that might be doing a midnight launch, your store will be doing a midnight launch.  That's the case for us, so we're doing a midnight for both games.

You're so quick to point out PS3 shortages, yet you ignore the console that's having real shortages.

The only shortages i heard about for Wii were mid January. Have they been sorted?

Wiis are impossible to find, just like ps3s. Nintendo has been sending out more stock than Sony, which helps a bit, but there's still far more demand for the Wii than the ps3, so we end up with more people looking for Wiis than ps3s.


Is this a new definition of impossible that we are all unaware of?

260,000 Wii's and PS3's sold last week.

 

It's called hyperbole.  My gosh.  The fact is, what few ps3s we get at my store are sold directly to those who have reserved systems, and we still have 8 people waiting in line.  Yeah, they're not impossible to find, but it sure is a pain in the ass at the moment. 

Though online stores seemingly have them, so if you want one, I'd pounce.

According to spwolf on gaf, Amazon got in a shipment yesterday, but sold out fairly quickly. Seems they've gotten in more today, and I doubt they'll last long, much like the shipment yesterday:

There was some restock at amazon (out again now) and gamestops (socal), so shipments might arrive before or maybe sony/stores are sending units in from other areas...

Quite interesting to see how this drama/failure unfolds

Seems to me that supply is pretty much meeting demand and we wont see any big jumps.  if what you are saying is true then people are just hanging on a few days and then getting their console, so we simply have a weeks or so backlog of sales?

how long are people on your waiting list for usually before they get a console? and do they all come back or do some get one elsewhere in the meantime.

 

Depends.  The first guy on our wait list has been their since the 17th.  5 or so from the list only signed on in the past few days (from the 20th).

But most people aren't willing to reserve.   "$25 deposit?  I'll go find one somewhere else."

But I believe we were supposed to get a shipment today. That should cover 3-6 people, depending on if we get one or two boxes.

Edit:

Oh, and our store is in the parking lot of a Wal-mart and down the road from a Best Buy.  We're a last resort for most people that aren't part of our usual clientele, and we have people coming in to ask for ps3s from the bigger stores all the time.  "You're out too?  Damn."

Maybe, but what's wrong with the models out now? The new ps3s are selling well...why does sony keep shooting themeselves in the foot?

Every time they do a hardware transition they have shortages. They really do make it look hard, so its a good explanation. Perhaps they are giving the PS3 an HDMI 1.4 connection and wireless N?


lol yeah they really do make it look difficult. I honestly think that if they are going to go through all this trouble they should pull a nintendo and give the ps3 a few new colors, i would kill for a yellow one.

well SONY says supply will be tight in EU/UK too

Amazon UK hasn't had 120GB PS3's in stock since xmas "apparently".

Looks like Nintendo can keep selling 300k+ Wiis/week. This would mean at least 11mio Wiis by the end of the third quarter.With this lineup, this seems very likely.

I've seem them in stock once since xmas on Amazon UK, and they were gone in a few hours. Game, Gamestation, ShopTo.net, John Lewis, HMV, Play.com all out of stock of 120gbs. Whatever people say, there are supply issues in the UK.
