Because when you're not playing the game the disc has to sit somewhere. A big pack of CD's looks silly (thought it would solve my space problem) and I'm too anal to leave my discs sitting out so they must have cases.

Well I guess it would be a problem if I just had all my game thrown about, but mine are either stacked up or on a bookshelf. Which means all I see is the edge. But I guess if that big of a problem, stop being cheap and buy the game when it has the "good case".

Or they could just not make terrible looking cases.

You also have the option of taking the covers out, again making it no big deal

well, here in europe they sell the PSN cards to add funds to PSN accounts in game cases... so i switch my silver ugly uncharted case for the PSN card case and then i go to the internet and download the original cover of the game... go to a print shop and pay 25 cents of the euro for them to print it in a nice paper... after this, i have my uncharted looking like the original...

simple!

I think it is just to show anyone who comes over to your house and looks at your game collection that you are a cheap bastard who only buys games after the price gets reduced.
Or that you are a mindless zombie and only buy games because everyone else already has it.
