LOL of course a PS3 is always too expensive because Sony doesn't know how to make consoles that people want at a price they want to pay for them. Wake me up when Sony actually learns how to compete as an actual business.

your personal bias is making you out to be a word that would be banned XD

lolz, and the ps1 and ps2 never existed, the 2 best selling home consoles are both sony my friend.

looka at the ps3 as a risk, nothing more nothing less, Sony more than knows how to destroy a market the ps1 and ps2 prove that. and they are way more successful than M$, because back in the ps1 days nintendo and sega ruled supreme, the ps1 was unknown and sold at the same price as it's competitors...... and completely dominated them, xbox HAD to release a year and a half earlier and they NEEDED to be hundreds of dollars cheaper. And even still they are losing a lead nowhere near as big as what the previous playstations had. I love how people conviently leave that FACT out of ps3 vs. xbox.

I love how people talk about Sony and how arrogant and cocky they were blah, blah, blah. these idiots had no idea waht the ps3 was doing for sony, Selling a console that cost 850 dollars to make for 600 is not arrogant at all, selling a ps2 hd upgrade that would insure market domination for 600....... that's freaking arrogant. But people know everything these days don't they?

Sony wanted to provide and extemely powerful console no matter the cost (imo), they also wanted to insure the future of playstation, look at it this way, the transition from ps3 to ps4 will be extremely easy, less expensive, and super powerful, cannot say the same for M$.

The fastest selling consoles are both Nintendo, the most profit in a generation Nintendo again and the most likely to succeed class of next generation is again Nintendo. Hell Nintendo are the only ones in it for the money it seems as both Sony and Microsoft are litterally stupid in a financial sense.

The biggest console flop this generation is the console with the most compute flops. How ironic, no? Remember the PS3 was fighting for first place and not some scrappy pathetic 2nd place photo finish with a baggage full of losses. All the PS1 showed was that Sony is a good opportunist, all the PS2 showed was that when the competition doesn't front up the leader of the previous generation rules, what the PS3 shows us is that Sony haven't got a clue as to what people actually want.

Selling a console for $599 isn't arrogant, making a console which costs the company $850, selling it for $599 and then cutting the price by 1/3rd less than a year later is stupid. Stupid is as stupid does and Sony got the stupid alright. If they wanted to ensure the future of Playstation they've gone about it the wrong way of course. You only ensure your future by winning in the console space or at least making a profit, they have neither.

Super powerful doesn't win the race, super appealing does however. Super powerful will also be super cheap in the future and super easy to develop for as Nintendo doesn't need PowerPC anymore as AMD can license X86 now. Quite frankly I don't particularly care what the hell Microsoft does with themselves. They can die, succeed, win, take a bow and exit the console space for all I care about the particulars. They win the award of 'slightly less stupid than Sony' yay for them.

They are ignoring the Wii because its out of the competition. It's nearly impossible to catch up to it...MS and Sony only fight each other.

B B B Broken r r r ecord is still broke.

Why have you taken so much offence that Greenberg doesn't mention the Wii?

PR is all about promoting your company, so it's only logical that Greenberg smacktalks about the PS3 since it's possible to beat Sony, whereas they have no chance of beating the Wii.

It's effectively a compliment to the runaway success of the Wii; stop taking it so personally, jeez.

Thank you.

and then I wondered to myself.................... next gen will he notice?

you do know those price cuts come as a result of lower production cost right? ha i asked that question as though your answer could ever be yes.

18 dollars is all they lose, pretty soon it wont be anything, and then it will be a profit, you think the ps3 wil never be profitable or ever turn a profit when the fact is that is going to happen really soon.

sony's not stupid, your just too......... omg teh ban hammer............................. you just haven't realized there plan yet........... NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES THEY CLEARLY SAY IT -_-

This isn't true.  The "six cents on a dollar" figure is an aggregate, and likely covers all SKUs worldwide.  The cheapest SKU is the US 120GB, which likely loses appreciably more than $18 per unit.  For example, here are the major SKU MSRPs worldwide (with currency conversions)...

  • US 120GB: $299.99
  • US 250GB: $349.99
  • EU 120GB: €299.99 ($407.08)
  • EU 250GB: €349.99 ($473.74)
  • JP 120GB: ¥29980 ($332.46)

Gotta love how some people seems to think that U.S is the world...
well, anywayz, God luck M$, you'll need it

For what we know, with both MS and Sony having moves available to counter each other, it could continue roughly this way, with PS3 outselling XB360 WW, but by a small margin and being outsold in USA. So MS would end its 7 years lifecycle unbeaten in USA and maybe WW too, while Sony could surpass MS during the last 3 years of its 10 years lifecycle. Both could be moderately happy and end this costly generation with a small net profit. Seen from this point of view they could actually be simply pretending they are fighting each other, but trying to not hurt themselves too much in the process. In support of this theory also the fac that by now even the stupidest of MS execs should have realized that Playstation 2 and 3 weren't the deadly danger for Windows in the living room they initially feared and that now the real threat could be Nintendo's next gen console (the current one is by project choice a gaming machine only, unable to become a general purpose living room and multimedia PC), if it just so wishes.

Microsoft belongs to an alternate reality where only 2 countries exist. The US and a small country named Japan that can easily be ignored because they dont buy their consoles :P

I think MS is trying to push beyond North America and Great Britain, but they face some roadblocks in that their strategy is built around Live,  and Live suffers so much from the territorial and language restrictions in a way that the Wii or PS3, being marketed more around the hardware, don't face.

All things considered their global reach is far beyond what the first Xbox achieved.  Don't forget that Playstation and the Nintendo brand have quite a significant headstart in these gaming markets (especially Japan).

Add in the fact that their most recognized franchise is a very Western game, and you have some issues.

The fact that 360 is still up on PS3 in total Others sales at this point is indication that they have gone beyond simply an American brand.  I mean, haven't they almost sold as many 360's outside North America as they did total original Xboxes?  That's fairly significant, no matter what happens the rest of the gen.

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?
