Forums - Sony Discussion - Teletext : Heavy Rain Review (Abysmal)

@ Hawk

Well I'm still on my first playthrough so I can't say for sure but from what I've seen so far there are multiple outcomes for every chapter of the story. Not only that but I have already seen my decisions from a previous chapter, affect my options on a later chapter. And if you let a character die, the story goes on without them. I'd say that an ending with 1 of 4 characters alive is probably a lot different than an ending with all 4 surviving. Just as an example.

Like I said, I can't say for sure because I haven't finished it yet but I suppose that could be the case. All I know is I'm enjoying it immensely so far.

Note to self: Next time Kowenicki goes on a spree against inFamous, recheck his trophies online. He hasn't even played inFamous. It would say 0% if he even touched the game under his profile....wtf?

Got any mates?  yeah I have to.    I played the demo fully on my own machine and I played the game at a mates house.

People know me better than that here.  I often call people out for exactly the same thing...

you actually went to the toruble to check that?  wow... get a hobby or something.

I don't understand why you'd play through the game on someone elses profile.

Also, It took me literally 30 seconds to open a new tab, log into my profile, go to the page, and type in your username. ;) I don't know of any hobbies that take that little amount of time. ;)

I didnt play through it... i didnt like it... thats the point.

I can think of a hobby thaty shouldnt take you anywhere near 30 seconds....

It's understandable but at the same time, if you haven't really played through the game, then it's hard to take your point of view on the game as seriously. That would be like me giving my view of Killzone 2. I haven't played the game enough to have my opinion of the game considered as a valid opinion.

Hm. You might want to get that checked out if it takes you less then 30 seconds. ;)

I personally would give inFamous a HORRIBLE review score, as I think I've only played an hour of it, and it took me about six tries, as it kept glitching and freezing.  My wife on the other hand played through it twice without any real issues (a few glitches with cover and getting stuck in the environment).  I also didn't care for the story when I saw the rest of it on her playthrough, thought the gameplay was repetitive and bland, and thought on the whole it was derivative...  I've never made another attempt at playing it, as I honestly found my experience with the game to be violently off-putting.  That said, if it had been a bit more polished and less buggy, I probably would have slogged through it.  Now, does that mean I can't have an opinion of it?

He doesn't like the game to the extent he won't even play it again.  Makes sense to me.

4/10... Seriously?!... 4/10?!
Even if you don't like the game at all, I can't think of any reason why this landmark game could possibly deserve this score. Sounds like a bonehead review to me.

Maybe the reviewer wants to play a videogame and not watch a movie and every once in awhile push a button.

Hmmm.  Was that a random comment or are you implying that Heavy Rain is watching a movie and pushing a button once in a while?

If the former is true then... yes maybe the reviewer does want to play a videogame.  Good talk!

If it's the latter then...  I kind of don't want to respond because you obviously haven't played the game or even have a clue what it's about.

If this was a joke then... LMFAO!!!

I personally agree with mhsillen.  I played through the demo and felt like what I did was akin to watching a DVD and having to press buttons on the remote constantly just to keep the movie going.  Which, they developer does say it's an interactive movie.  I am very on the fence for this game, I'm not sure if I want to get it or not.  I like the graphics, the story may be quite good.  But, there are plenty of thrillers I can watch without tedious button pushing on the remote.  I don't know.  I'm still intrigued though.

But see that's not what it is at all.  The whole point of the game is that the player shapes the story.  Every action and decision you make affects the path the story takes in either small or large ways.  You don't just accomplish goals to make the story progress on a linear path.  (Which, by the way, is more than I can say for most "true" video games.)  I love movies but Heavy Rain engrosses you in the story in a way that no movie can.  Like it or not, it is so much more than just QTE's that I just can't understand how anyone can see it as just pushing buttons.

However, I respect your opinion and understand that everyone has different tastes.  To each his own I guess.

But, umm....   this isn't true, either.  Most of the scenarios have no penalty for just setting the controller down, accept for maybe "pushing  button" to end it.  To stay light on any spoilers, I'll use a scenario from the demo (though I did purchase and like the game): Scott's asthma attack.  You can go make a sandwich, come back and he's still just there weezing.  Give him the inhaler, it ends with no difference if you'd done it immediately, and he's never going to collapse.  Then, there's the confrontation after that... put the controller down and eat your sandwich.  You will get beat up, and then the game continues as if you'd won the fight and chased him off insted of taking th eHomer Simpson approach...  you just have more bruises.

It IS and was MEANT TO BE an interactive movie.  It's one hurt by some bad voice acting, inconsistent "production values" (graphics), and some ham-handed plotting/writing (the mall scene that kicks off the whole game had me rolling my eyes and groaning at how bad it was...  that saidd, I already knew the outcome wince it was spoiled ad nauseam in trailers-- that reminds me.  That scene plays out the same way NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO, and your only input is running around awkwardly to advnce the plot).  Still, I've loved some movies that had the same flaws, and I'm loving this game...  but damn if I wasn't laughing at innapropriate times playing last night because of all the things "wrong" with the game.

Thank you Stephen, this is good to hear.  So, even though you feel that what you do doesn't highly affect the progression of the game, you still enjoy it?  This is good to hear and helps push me towards deciding to get it more than anything I've read so far.  Knowing someone else doesn't feel you get much input in how the story progresses, yet you still are enjoying it.

What's wrong with the review? If he gave an honest opinion and explained the reasons why he didn't like it then there is nothing wrong with it.

Well... After watching a friend play Fahrenheit and Heavy Rain... Barely anything has changed. It does feel one dimensional, boring, and uncreative. Hell i dont consider this "game" nor the other one a game.

Your from UAE? You know Heavy Rain was ban there. It means that your friend imported it and received it the same day, and you had enough time to tried it. Can you show me how to make my own teleporter too?

Don't be stupid I can find that game in any Un-Official shop that sells games here. I know i wouldn't find it at Geekay. Besides if you think I'm lying go to youtube and type in LastRambo34(one) (sorry my one key is busted). He's the guy that has the game, and some other guys that I know also have it. This world isn't really hard to get through... =_= illegally that is... Especially in UAE.

Edit: I don't think the score should be THAT low just to make my self clear. I just don't enjoy games like these... I don't like most games anyway.

So, Sam & Max or Monkey Island should get similar scores because they have more in common with Heavy Rain than anything else. It's just that, in Heavy Rain, even your mistakes are going to keep the story going. On top of that, there really are some amazing moments in this game. If there were a spoiler- free thread, I could convince people that HR is a must play (possibly the best experience I have this generation --I'm probably blinded by it's "newness") but at the same time, I'd be spoiling it for people.

Hmmm, well this helps too.  From what I've seen, you have similarish taste to me.

Though I disagree with the monkey island comparison.  You are not even able to have an inventory in Heavy Rain.  Much less decide if and where to use items.  Are you even able to roam anywhere freely in Heavy Rain?  I mean in the demo, in the hotel, once you walk up the stairs, if you immediately turn around to walk back down, the game doesn't let you.

This is a pretty good comparison...  HR does have more in common with the point and click adventure genre, but yes, there is not always a penalty for you slipping up, and (as the review said) there aren't any real "puzzles" that hinder your progress.

I think the best thing that can be said for this game is that it IS ART...  Art can be divisive and still be good.

Cons:

-bad voice acting on secondary chacters

-stilted animation

-graphics are inconsistent (lifelike character interacts with object rendered by PS2)

Pros:

-Atmospheric, tense moments

-Intriguing plot

-Cinematic presentation

Depending on how you weigh it, this one is gonna be all over the charts.

Lol.  Okay fine, I didn't go eat a sandwich when I was playing and I'm still on my first playthrough so I haven't gone back to check out all the scenarios.  So everything is not affected by your decisions but it at least feels like it is.   And to use an example from that same chapter, I do know that whether or not that woman talks to you depends on what decision you make regarding how to approach her.

I do agree that the voice acting can be pretty bad at times, especially from the dad and kids.  Also there are a bunch of glitchy parts such as people walking right through you during cut scenes.  I did crack up at that.  But c'mon man, a 4/10 is just ridiculous.
