Forums - Gaming Discussion - possible impact of a ps3 "arcade"

They're better off just staying where they are for a while. PS3 is outselling 360 even at a $100 higher entry price so I'd say they're doing fine. Well besides losing about $20 on each console.

The other thing is besides a smaller hard drive and taking out the built in wifi what could they possibly do? A Blu-ray-less PS3 is simply not an option.

Take out the wifi and the blu-ray and you have an Xbox Arcade with bluetooth :P

Unicorns ARE real - They are just fat, grey and called Rhinos

another price cut around Aug/Sept this year would be nice, along with the release of GT5.

But really, the cost of production saved by going from 120gig to 40gig would be minuscule. Hence, they'd be losing even more money per ps3 sold.

If anything, I'd prefer a PS3 Elite with PS2/PSP game compatibility and an improved browser.

Wait, isnt the Slim their "arcade"?

No.

The Slim is a scaled down PS3, not a stripped down one.

Fair enough. Then a stripped down one, cpu speed and whatnot, would require them to engineer a new processor along with the hardware to support it. Lots more R&D

haha yeah that would be killer. Too bad it isn't feasible.

What would you strip out to reduce the price that much? I'm not sure it's feasible. They certainly aren't going to sell them without hard drives with all the installs. MS can do it because they are not required (though that strategy has obvious drawbacks along with the low price benefits - plus if people upgrade to a hard drive, MS smartly has that market cornered. Sucks as consumers but great for business).

Hard drives are dirt cheap for companies. That would save them perhaps $5. The only reason it worked for Microsoft was that only Microsoft HDDs work on a 360. Any 2.5" HDD works on a PS3, so that would just fail miserably.

They can't take out Bluetooth, because the controller needs it.

WLAN...maybe. But I'm not sure that would cut $120 off the cost...

It would do good in sales but cost Sony a shitload of money.

They are fine for now, they have been outselling the Xbox 360 as of late and have no reason to cute the price.

yeah lose money if they cut the price on current model ps3's, I mean what if they make a stripped down less featured (less cost) ps3 on the market

At this point, what are they going to strip out of it? The Cell processor? The thing has already been nuked compared to the launch console.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

When will people finally learn that diffrence in size of HDD has minimal impact on price ?

PS3 arcade? what are they going to remove now.. they've already cut out PS2 BC support, linux support. The only thing left to do is charge for PSN.
