Forums - Gaming - Movie Studios: Games Have Hurt Action Films

The UK Telegraph ran a story this past Saturday morning discussing what many execs in Hollywood have taken to calling the "X-box Factor," i.e., that young men who previously flocked to action films in years past have now eschewed that habit in favor of playing games at home. The article cites studio executives discussing a resurgence of female oriented romantic comedies such as Valentine's Day and Dear John. Via the Telegraph:

“A lot of young males are spending much more time on the internet, games and UFC [ultimate fighting],” Peter Guber, chairman of Mandalay Pictures production company and former studio chief at Sony Pictures, told The Sunday Telegraph.

“They have not abandoned movies but they have diminished as a target, while the female audience has remained robust.”

The article cites the poor Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic receptions for the films specified as evidence that reviews have little impact on the reception of these films. There was no mention of Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.

Ummm....Avatar is an action movie and it just beat Titanic. Movie studios just need to make better movies and stop hiring those crappy directors that only care about explotions or making spider-man emo.

I agree with your one word "Avatar". The "Dark Knight" also was above a billon dollars as well. People are willing to go see good action films. The tolerance for bad action films is much lower now.

The other factor is ROI from chick flicks is incrediblely high. The latest Twilight flick made 700 million, but the cost was only 50 million for the budget. Even adding in 50 million for advertising that is still an ROI of over 7 to 1 before video sales. Chick flicks are cheap to make and thus are easy to make money on.

Games hurt action movie because games are more emervive than movies they like there their when they play not like a movie.

I would rather play a game than watch a movie. But not movie based games since those are terrible.

Does this mean they're going to make more serious films for me to watch?

I'm guessing Transformers 2 says no. At least Avatar, which had a plot and decent narrative and some brains, trounced it at the box office.

In fact, coming of a year that saw Avatar and Transformers 2 type numbers I'd say that's just an excuse. The reality is some big films underperformed, like GI: Joe because they were both shit and thankfully it appears only one major shit film a year is allowed to be a huge hit these days.

Go make me more films like The Hurt Locker, Moon, Where the Wild things are and stop grumbling. I'll take Avatar 2 as well but they can keep Transformers 3 if its as bad as 2.

Also, since when have movies like GI:Joe and Transformers 2 actually been well reviewed?

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Just sounds like more excuses from people who just aren't making stuff that's very good.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Of course action games have hurt action movies. I can get tons of action from Wii Fit.

It sounds good. I love playing online games very much. Especially I use to play the game World of War Craft. It is a dashing game.

Cry me a river. Fans of action will go for the best and that is action you you can be a part of whether it be in the real world (sports) or in the made up entertainment action world (gaming). I rather participate than watch a fantasy (movies) only.

Lol MAYBE if they would quit With the Remake After Remake people would want to see them again?
