Does this mean they're going to make more serious films for me to watch?
I'm guessing Transformers 2 says no. At least Avatar, which had a plot and decent narrative and some brains, trounced it at the box office.
In fact, coming of a year that saw Avatar and Transformers 2 type numbers I'd say that's just an excuse. The reality is some big films underperformed, like GI: Joe because they were both shit and thankfully it appears only one major shit film a year is allowed to be a huge hit these days.
Go make me more films like The Hurt Locker, Moon, Where the Wild things are and stop grumbling. I'll take Avatar 2 as well but they can keep Transformers 3 if its as bad as 2.
Also, since when have movies like GI:Joe and Transformers 2 actually been well reviewed?
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
