I agree with your one word "Avatar". The "Dark Knight" also was above a billon dollars as well. People are willing to go see good action films. The tolerance for bad action films is much lower now.
The other factor is ROI from chick flicks is incrediblely high. The latest Twilight flick made 700 million, but the cost was only 50 million for the budget. Even adding in 50 million for advertising that is still an ROI of over 7 to 1 before video sales. Chick flicks are cheap to make and thus are easy to make money on.
