I had some time to kill so I figured I would see what kind of PC $500 can buy and this is what I came up with:

  • Athlon II X3 2.9 Ghz
  • 4GB DDR3
  • HD 4850 512MB DDR3
  • Western Digital 750GB HDD
  • Samsung DVD/RW
  • Asrock AM3 770 board
  • Antec NSK 4482B w 380W 80+ efficiency PSU

Pretty cosmic specifications for $500 +shipping/tax/OS + anything else if needed, if I say so myself. Asrock is the 'value brand' of Asus so they aren't too shabby really.

And you could even opt for something like a 320 GB Caviar Blue instead of that HDD, and cut the DVD drive as well, since not everyone even needs one nowadays, or can just take one out of the comp it's replacing as well, and push it well below 500$.

Personally if I was building from scratch I would leave out the optical drive. I haven't burnt a disc in years and I certainly haven't played one either. That would save $25. The reasoning for the larger HDD was because I figured that with limited sata power connectors on the PSU it would be best to limit the number of drives. 750GB would last for ages and age and it would only save about $20.

But for install the games you need an optical drive right? Or are you going to buy games just from Steam? I'm not a professional pc gamers, but i would say to leave the optival drive out just if this pc is only for gaming, because Optical drive is very useful in the everyday use.

Can you really buy such a system for 500$? Right now I'm looking for a new hard drive, graphic card and PSU similar to those in that spec and its going to cost me over 300$. Through I guess prices are a bit lower in US.

Also I'm not sure if 380W is enough for 4850. ATI say that 450W is required.

It is enough. A system with a Radeon HD 4850 at full load roams around 250W and his PSU efficience is like 300W.

Personally, I'd trade this video card for something like a 5750/5770 but that's just me :P

A lot of people only get games off of Steam and stuff, yeah.

no not in Europe.

The same exact PC costs about $700 here.

I looked it up.

I make it about $633 pricing all the parts from ebuyer.co.uk- I'm sure you could save a bit if you shopped around as well.

PSU seems a little low, probably go with the antec sonata 2.
