Forums - Sales - Rumor: RE:UC sells 100,000 units first day

I think Resident Evil UC just came in at Futureshop. I am going to pick it up after breakfast. I really think whoever designed the Wii Zapper sucks though.

don't be that suprised, you guys remember that thread with famitsu analysts? Both of them predicted about 500k sales for RE:UC. 100k on first day would probably put it in line for 300-400k so in that respect it's not that great. When you consider capcom's target sales for the game they are gonna beat it for sure.

First, while you're right UC isen't a "main serie" game, it still belongs to a very popular franchise and, don't forget it, isen't the first rail shooter in the RE univers.
IF you check various website, you'll see UC get a huge cover, far greater than RE5 on which infos remain scarce.

Beyond that, you're saying rail shooter don't perform well on console. Are you sure of that ?
We might lack some recent datas but House of the Dead 2 on DC did 260k, in japan only. Time Crisis 300k in japan only.

Beyond what might be considered as my biaised opinion, just ask yourself this :

- If this genre is not really popular, will Namco invest in a new Time Crisis and guncon ?

- If this genre is not really popular, why Konami would have shipped on retailers shelves more than 100 000 copies of UC (once again if the initial figure is real) for day one ?

Because to me, it would be a proof that Konami has high expectations on this title, on this genre, and do not consider it as a mere "cash in". So 100k would not be that surprising.

There are a few rail shooters that have done real well.  Like Lethal Enforcers, House of the Dead, Time Crisis.  For the most part though, even the ones that are super popular in the arcade don't do well on consoles.  Usually because the ports are horrible or they require the purchase of a light gun in order to be fun.  Granted RE: UC has the advantage of the RE name and Wii controls (not having to buy an accessory) but that in itself doesn't promise great sales.  I forget the name of the other RE rail shooter (for the PS1), but I do remember that it was mega crap and it had weak sales if I remember right.  At a time when the PS1 had a larger install base than the Wii does now as well as having the RE name.  As far as coverage goes, RE 5 isn't coming out for awhile yet.  You'll see media coverage well above and beyond RE: UC as RE 5 gets closer to release.

Regardless of all that, to me it's a suprise.  I expected the game to do well, but this exceedes my expectations.  I hope that it's all true.  If it is true then it makes me very happy for one simple reason:  When third party games like this sell well it encourages developers to work harder and realease more games for the Wii.  Even if it sells 500k lifetime, it's a big profit for Capcom because of the low development costs for the Wii.  By comparison someone from Namco, I forget who, stated that a PS3 game would have to sell 500k just to break even.  Now that's an exaggeration I'm sure, but what it means is that 100k for the Wii is worth more than 100k for the PS3, and that's why it's a great sales number even if it isn't earth shattering.  Basically, they've made a profit the first day if the rumor holds true.

Woo, I'm out of breath now.  Sorry for the long winded post, I kind of ran away with it :D

Oh, and if anyone disputes anything I say just refer to my sig :P

I know you believe you understand what you think I said but I don't think you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Cryoakira and Johnsobas:

Good stuff. So 100K first day may indicate the game is performing within optimistic, but still reasonable expectations, lending weight to the rumor. People blown away by the number, including myself, hadn't checked the history or the expecations.

So if this 100K first day is accurate, the question is whether the Wii Zapper can extend the legs of the game. Most lightgun shooters come with an expensive accessory only usable in one game. This game comes with a cheap accessory usable in a number of games.

Looking at the sales, according to this rumor, you must be correct. What else can i say. One reason why RE:UC gets that much coverage, is how it splits opinions. Some people think it's really great to have Resident Evil railshooter, which gives more details for the RE games story, and some think it really sucks to have a non-survival horror game in the series. Just remember what the talk was 6 months ago even here at VGChartz about the game and the same can still be seen in various sites. But, i don't visit japanese sites, so i really can't say what the japanese gamers opinion is. The railshooters that have had success on consoles, are the same games, that have been popular in arcades and have somewhat had ”casual" appeal. RE isn't known for it's casual appeal (ok, the first parts did appeal to "casuals" with it's horror theme) or it being a shooter (although RE4 had a theme for more of a shooter).

When i read this post, it came in to my mind, that how about the system selling potential of this game. Will Wii sales be high in Japan with RE|UC launch? I had somekind of idea about expectations being around 500k, but i didn't know it was for Japan only. :)
