Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Mass Effect 2 pissing gamers off

I noticed Oblivion and Fallout 3 had the same problem, it was so annoying that I couldn't be bothered reading through the text's. Then my HD TV came along and fixed everything.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

I can't believe their are still those that purchase a X360/PS3 and have not upgraded to HD still.

How our favorite systems are just like humans and sometimes have issues finding their special someone...

Xbox 360 wants to KinectPS3 wants to Move!  Why are both systems having such relationship problems?  The reason is they both become so infactuated with desire while watching the Wii as it waggles on by. They simply want what they can't have.

This is really not that unique. HDTVs are pretty much the standard.

I love how HD gaming is so damn advanced yet it can't perform simple tasks like, oh I don't know, have villages and properly display simple text... 8 bit gaming superior to HD gaming confirmed?

Just kidding to those who don't have a sense of humor and to the die hard HD fanatics.

Microsoft launched a HD-console back in 2005 so it's about time the games for it caught up. Mass Effect 2 looks fanastic in HD, that is the way it's supposed to be played. Gamers who have a SDTV and get a HD-console know that they aren't getting the maximum out and as time passes the differences will only get bigger. You can hardly blame developers for going with the times. As for that article, among the average households the percentage of SDTVs is low as it also counts older households who never owned a console. Among games the percentage is obviously higher.

Just because a family has an HDTV doesn't mean that they will let their kids play videogames on it.

Oh well, guess that's one more stroke against buying a "HD" system, since I don't watch TV.

To be fair, you would've just seen the same towns in FF13 as you would've seen in FF1 (and every FF since), just with a superior audiovisual expression.

The way I see it, if you were prepared to blow $300 on your 360 you should have spent $300 on a 32" LCD TV first. So yeah, QQ. Sorry I have no sympathy for people who blow money on HD systems but can't take the very reasonable costs of a TV to actually give that system a reasonable difference from last-gen visuals.

Yeah all those parents who gave their children a Xbox 360 but not bought an HD tv for them are assholes.

Seriously all this whining is bullshit. The 360 is an HD console, bottom line, if you don't plan on playing in HD then just buy a Wii and shut the hell up. How can someone even think to call it "punishing the consumer" when it's advertised as a next gen HD console? The consumer is punishing themselves if anything. As it's been mentioned, there are also inexpensive solutions for those who don't have a big flat screen and can't afford one or those that don't want to buy an entry level flat screen just for gaming. I'd say the least expensive way to enjoy an HD console in HD is to buy 20+" computer monitor from Newegg or one of those other online stores and the proper adapters from Monoprice if needed. Cost, anywhere from $100-$200 and that's if you don't already have a computer monitor. Then for another $100 or less you could get yourself this for audio http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-X-540-Speaker-System-Black/dp/B000JJM8XE (this set up bumps pretty good for the price) or even a 2.1 set up. Actually if you really wanted the audio upgrade, I'd suggest some nice headphones. I recently upgraded to a decent pair of 5.1s and I hate playing without them now (I usually don't). I gamed on an sdtv for a bit too long before I got a nice hdtv due to not even thinking about the computer monitor route. Don't underestimate a smaller scale set up either, playing on a monitor sitting about 2' away with some decent audio kicks ass. So for under $300 you have a full, pretyy nice little HD set up. I'd also be willing to bet that most people who try to bring price into this argument are already spending the money that could be used for an upgrade on all kinds of other shit.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

So basically, if you buy a so called "HD console," you should also spend an additional $500+ to buy an HDTV just to achieve the optimal experience on that console. And now they are going one step beyond and punishing the people who chose to stick with the cheaper SD TVs.

THIS is the sort of stubborn mentality that keeps the HD consoles and their supporting developers confined to an ever dwindling niche within gaming.

That "niche" has the same (well, slightly higher) market share as the Wii and even higher software sales. I don't understand where you're going with that ever-dwindling bit either. There's multiple successful markets in the current industry. Stop attacking the one you don't own. It's even moer ironic coming from you when the 3 games in your sig are all part of that same core gaming market you're attacking, and is not part of the expanded Wii audience your post claims to be supporting.

Yet most of the developers pouring resources into the games are draining endless amounts of money.

Whatever, my intention was not to get into a Wii vs HD debate tonight, but my point is that NO game should EVER punish a user for chosing to NOT buy a specific product, particularly when that product is a $500+ HDTV. That is just absurd and really rubs me the wrong way. I just hope this doesnt become a trend. HD games should NEVER penalize SDTV users in ANY WAY. Period.

And before you say it, yes I do own a 360 and a good HDTV, so please dont pull the "dont knock what you dont have" card.

Where are you getting $500+? HDTVs don't get that expensive till you get to 42". Smaller, 22" HDTVs are $200 and less, and a good-sized 32" one is $300, barely more than you and I paid for our Wiis and the same price as an HD console and infinitely more useful than any single game system.

As far as penalizing SDTV users, they aren't even sold anymore. Only massive stores like Walmart have any at all, and even they are down to 2 or 3 max, and by the end of this year even those will be gone. Going even further than that, it doesn't even effect all SDTV users.

I'm not saying everyone should upgrade. I'm saying if you're going to bother coughing up the big money for an HD console you should. Frankly I think my Wii on my HDTV looks better than my 360 does when I plug it into an SDTV. It makes a big difference, and if you're blowing the kind of money the average gamer does per year on games, it's time to play it a little conservative for a few months and upgrade. We're past the point of complaining about this.

IF you bought a console who's entire advertising appeal is based around it being a part of the "HD Generation," join it.

I have nothing against a consumer being rewarded for "upgrading" to an HDTV. What I don't like is the fact that these consumers chosing NOT to upgrade, are actually being PUNSHIED for NOT dishing out an additional $400+ ( let's face it, any HDTV worth gaming on generally costs this much at the very least) ON TOP OF the $300 console they purchased. It is a blatant middle finger to a large portion of the gaming community, and it should not be tolerated. Then people wonder why HD gaming doesn't quite have mainstream appeal.. It costs you a damn arm and a leg for optimal experience.

Put yourself in the consumer's shoes.

If were on a budget and you did not own an HDTV but happened to own a 360, and decided to buy Mass Effect 2, hoping for an excellent game, and instead you get text that is nearly unreadable, how would you feel about that? Personally, I would sell the game, and maybe even my Xbox 360 on principle. Rewarding an HD user is one thing. Penalizing a non HD user is something completely different, and should NEVER happen.

No it's YOUR fault and not the game's or the developer's.

I played Dead Rising on a 11 inch SDTV a few years ago and I know how hard it is to read the text there. But just because my TV is 12 years old I would never blame the developers for it.

I knew the screen is small, I knew I could only play in SD and miss out on many things, so I can't complain.

Windows 7 doesn't run properly on any 4 years old standard PC without upgrades for example. If I would complain about upgrading from Windows 95 to Windows 7 because my rig is not good enough, everybody would laugh at me big time.

This is silly. HDTVs are crazy cheap, you don't even need a 1080p. The only situation that this is understandable is if the one complaining is a kid, and he can't really go out and buy his own TV. In that case, he should complain to his parents, not to Bioware. Anyone over 18 that's complaining about this, for shame.
