Forums - Sony Discussion - Why Are Sony Letting Microsoft Bully Them Out Of Familiar Franchises?

Grand Theft Auto's An XBOX-Connected Franchise Now? Right.

I know Sony won’t pay for exclusives and I think that’s admirable. After all, would I prefer Grand Theft Auto IV DLC exclusivity for 12 months, or a whole new Wipeout game? The $50million Microsoft paid for that GTA DLC is probably in a similar ball-park to what would be spent on a mid-large PSN release (perhaps less) and thus, absolutely I’d take the latter. But when it comes to franchises such as Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy, I do wonder why Sony are letting Microsoft bully them.

Take Final Fantasy XIII for example. The game’s getting a huge push on the XBOX 360 right now. An exclusive bundle, some avatar content, so on and so forth. Is Final Fantasy XIII on 360 going to outsell the PS3 version? Of course it’s not, not in this world. But Microsoft are making people aware the game’s coming to XBOX 360. They know what a draw the Final Fantasy franchise has been to the Playstation in the past, and I’d imagine their sole aim is to match that.

The same is apparent for Metal Gear Solid. The way Microsoft handled the announcement of Metal Gear Rising at last year’s E3 was almost smug. “Now we finally have Metal Gear Solid coming to the XBOX 360.” I’d imagine Microsoft will push the game on their platform in a similar fashion.

My question is: why are Sony letting them?

When it comes to Final Fantasy, GTA and Metal Gear Solid, the games were always due to go multiplatform. Honestly, for franchises as big as these, it doesn’t make sense to focus on a single-platform. But this is where Sony should be using their connection, and historical affiliation with the franchises to bury the Microsoft version. The Japanese Final Fantasy XIII PS3 bundle should be coming to the West. Sony should have announced Metal Gear Rising, not Microsoft. Sure the press-release would list the XBOX 360 version, but Sony should be burying these connections. These are inherently historical Playstation titles, and yet Sony are letting Microsoft tell everyone about the XBOX versions. Why?

One can only imagine dollar signs are involved, but when it comes to the marketing of inherently Playstation products, I just can’t understand why Sony aren’t spending some of their money here. Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid and, to a lesser extent, Grand Theft Auto are historically Playstation-related franchises. Why not remind people of that?

On topic: didn't Sony pay for the Batman exclusive DLC?

We forget sometimes that this is a business - not a sport. MS outcoached Sony at the start of the generation - remember how smug Sony was when it unveiled the PS3. Things will shift back Sony's way in time. These things are cyclical. Games that were only on Xbox are coming to PS3 eventually too.

There's too much money available - and dev costs are too high - for anybody not 1st or 2nd party to go exclusive for too long. And the number of units being sold on these big franchises will put the price tag for buying exclusives in the major franchises WAY too high for it to make sense.

A minor, temporary blip on the radar in the grand scheme of things.

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?

there better of making new ip of thier own, the others are on ps3 anyway.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Sony, a japanese native company can't help their fellow japanese developers - which they have strong historical afiliation with- such as Namco, SE, and Capcom, are going multiplatform and in most cases make exclusive deals with Microsoft and develop many of their games firstly on the 360 platform (Bayonetta, Resident Evil 5, almost all multiplat JRPGs this gen). So what's so surprising the other developers outside japan (which are in fact leading this gen) behave no different? In the end, it matters little honestly, and Sony knows this. It's not worth the money to them to be "percieved" as strongly affiliated to a MULTI-PLAT IP. After all, it's on their system. Is it the best version or the best it can be? not their problem, it's all up to the developers. I'd say let M$ throw their money to third parties, THEY ALL eventually go multiplat (Bioshock I'm looking at you) and the only thing that remains are strong in-house studios that can produce real-defining games for your own console.

Microsoft is full of money while Sony isn't

Bit overboard on thinking that 50 million is in the right ball park for a mid-large PSN game :p That would probably give you tens of titles :p

"Sony won’t pay for exclusives and I think that’s admirable"- they are upto something this gen and M$ wonder what.
