Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Sony failing to capitalize? A question of momentum.

listen. I go to farmers market every weekend in the summer in my town. I'm a classicaly trained chef. I'm not the best baker but what I make I do very very well. So every saturday morning I show up with 25 brownie tarts, 25 blackberry tarts, 25 chocolate raspberry tarts and 5 dozen of my gramma's recipe blonde brownies with nuts and chocolate chips in them. I only make so many and then I'm done for the day. Sure I could make more but the quality may start to slip. It's the old saying of quality versus quantity and Sony represents that to a T. The systems will be made and sold and Sony will make a profit. Keep in mind that every Dvd and blu-ray disk sold sony gets a chunk of change from it.

well the slowing of momentum is a fact... not sure why anyone here is tryingto say it isnt so. And saying its still above WW week after week is true, but its a shrinking gap. It sisnt so long agio that people were saying the slim would be so far ahead that the lifetime gap would fall quickly... that is simply not going to happen at the current rates.

PS3 and 360 may be almost identical in weekly sales soon....

Somehow, I consider Zen's application of the word momentum to be different than yours. Yours is based purely on what they sell. His (imho) is how their momentum is way higher than their current ability to keep up with it and how - in that regard - they are failing to capitalize. So their momentum may not have diminished, while their selling capabilities at the moment have been hampered by a (self-proclaimed) lack of units, which in turn may lead to diminished momentum in the end.

The only way we'll probably ever know whether their momentum has been affected is if they manage to get decent supplies in and then seeing whether sales also pick up (if they do, the momentum wasn't harmed that much / if it doesn't pick up, then it has been harmed or there wasn't that much momentum to begin with)

so bascially, not enought shipped console = lose of momentum according to you ...

... I just dont agree

Not meeting the demand THE month where it doesnt matter is clearly a ... non event.

And X10, outside the crappy PR from Greenberg, just showed us that REACH will not dominate PS3 exclusive in the gfx departement and disapointed all the PC gamers that wanted to play Alan Wake ... good job MS.

The only REAL good news : 360 was undertracked by VGC ...

Well, based on what you said in another thread (and which I have been thinking about):

Somehow I can see Sony not increasing production until they either pass the financial year-mark (minimize losses for the PS3) and to get them closer or into profitability with the hardware alone. Add marketing for GoW III and possibly FF XIII and it might propel them a bit more when they do start producing more.

Or am I being too logical whereas Sony has not always followed logic? :p

and what happen if we compare it to the january/feb datas from 2009 when 360 was outselling PS3 and was, at some point, sold out too ?

Well the only momentum that ultimately matters to Sony is the sales momentum. And that sales momentum is a result of momentum in other areas such as new games and hype. The new games this first quarter in the west wont make the slightest difference. GT5 would have and the delay of that is a mistake.

(edit. GOW III will help but that right at the end of the qtr)

IF the game content is worth the wait then delaying GT5 is perhaps one of their best move so far ...

I don't think Sony lost momentum as such, but they did miss the chance to gain a bit more in US. This isn't just Sony though, it's down to the stores too. The retailers will decide how many PS3s they want to buy, and I bet that they underestimated Slim demand in US vs 360 because they'd be going on past sales.

So WW I think PS3 momentum is more or less what it was (360 too) but in US they didn't hit quite as hard as they could, although I don't think they lost anything as such.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

the momentum wasn't there to begin with.

Don't overdo it. If there was no momentum, then it's quite weird that the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 the past few months.

Need to take into account Mass Effect 2 boost + PS3 shortages in NA with those numbers dont we?

And when will we see your next thread about the gap. The one with the "how long it takes for ___ to overtake ___"?
