Forums - PC Discussion - Why are Adobe products so expensive?

Because its a product thats used by companies to make money. Its like when I buy a DVD for my home I'm going to get it for a lot cheaper then if I was a rental store who would pay for the right to rent it.

Not only that but these products are expensive to develop and are purchased mainly by corporations who have the money to buy mass licenses of them.

I know Adobe tailors they're products for companies and corporations, but I think they should make it cheaper for consumers. It's not really fair for those of us who are into editing and photo work. I mean, what consumer today can pay that much for software like that?

That's why there are cheaper versions.... as I said earlier you can get a version of PS for £60.... or go into the £1000s If you are just using it as a hobby you don't need all the extra features that are worth £100s to businesses.

I know they have cheaper alternatives for consumers, like the "Elements" versions of the programs. But I want all the features, especially since I have an HD camcorder I could use. But it looks like I'll have to settle for the $100 elements version of preimere, instead of the $600 full package.

Funny thing is that we proffesionals don't even use premiere will it is in the master collection for video editing... nooo... we want the best and spend money on apple's final cut studio.. it's cheap just $999!! it used to be $1299... >_>

If I was a millionaire, then yeah, $999 is no problem. Even then, that's still a lot of money for just ONE program. I could buy 3 1/3 PS3's with that.

Yup! It's even better that somebody like myself would prefer to build a PC with the hardware that I want so not only would I have to spend more on a Mac, but then I'd have to drop that much extra on Final Cut Studio.

Though seeing my video come out of Final Cut or After Effects taking up over 1,000 megs and be cut down to double digits in compressor is just bliss.

My niece needed Adobe Photoshop CS4 this year for school. It was going to cost her like $1,000 Canadian. Crazy.. Students can't afford that. She did what many people would do, but if it had a lower price point, she would have purchased it - or one of us would have purchased it for her.

I'm looking at student pricing right now. The monster deluxe version of CS4 is going for a little over $600 CAD. One of the lesser versions which probably has everything she needs is between $300 and $400.

Don't buy educational software at your local CompuSmart, people. This stuff is massively discounted for students and teachers at educational software stores.

Are you looking at the Mac version?

The store I'm looking at has Windows and Mac SKUs at the same price.

After a little more research I think the school I work at might have a special arrangement with Adobe. I still think that your niece could have made do with one of the lesser versions of CS4 and saved $400.

You can get full versions of those products for halfprice or less usually at a college store.

I used to be the invetory guy at one. Just go to your local college store and ask.

Things like Photoshop are expensive because they're professional products. If you're a student you should be able to get Photoshop for less than $200 or you can get Paint.net for free.

The cool thing about Paint.net is it does more things than Gimp does and it controls pretty closely to Photoshop. There are some things that are a pain in the ass to do in it but there are other things that it does better than Photoshop. I would give it a try if you don't feel like paying for Photoshop and don't want to waste your time with Gimp (because that is what you would be doing).

I'll have to try that out...

Man I hate GIMP so hard.
