Forums - PC Discussion - Internet speed keeps slowing down

So a few months ago I decided to get Ultra High Speed because I was always using just regular high speed (1.6 Mbps). The ad said I can get up to 7 Mbps but I only got 5.5 Mbps, still a big improvement but I was hoping for 7. Anyway ever since then my internet speed has never been consistent, unlike when I had regular high speed, it just keeps fluctuating.

When I first got Ultra High speed it was going 5.5 Mbps, then it went to 5 then 4.5 and now I average 4. Also every now and then it go down so much (right now it's at .3 Mbps) and it'll stay like that and it'll stay that low for quite some time, it's been actually going this low quite a bit lately. I called them up several times, the first time they did something at there computer and it helped for a bit and then just went back to doing what it always does after about a day or two. Another time they got someone to check the line in my area, it went up to 5 Mbps for that day and then after again back to doing what it does.

I checked my computer with several virus scanners and cleaned out my cach and temporary internet files and reset my modem hundreds of times and nothing seems to be helping.

So I was just wondering if anyone has a clue of whats going on and what I should do?

let me guess...is it Rogers?

i know i had to have them out a dozen times to fix my internet. they had to replace the line to the house 4 times. just keep on them and they will eventually fix it.

It's definitely your ISP's fault. Keep calling them.

Idea: Ask them for a test you can use that they would accept, then keep a daily log until they can't ignore it.

@MrBubbles, I'm with Bell Aliant

@Soleron, What exactly do you mean by a test they would accept?

my ISP had a similar problem. They then made me download a specific file from their server to test the speed n then sent some1 over, keep bugging em!

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

Up to 7 mb/s? isn't that kinda low?

I have up to 24 MB/s right now only and I'm considering upgrade it to up to 100 mb/s.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

I mean they probably wouldn't accept you saying "this thing on the internet says I get 5Mbps instead of 7". So ask them how you should measure your connection, then record using whatever they suggest, so they can't dismiss it.

If it's cable, you share a node with a group of people. If one person is leaching the fuck out of the internet, your node's total throughput will decrease. Usually people on torrents that keep them on forever.

Maybe your network isn't using enough nodes?

Lots of ISPs advertise that you're getting "Up to x Mb/s," and then you end up getting much less.

We're with Bell as well, we're getting "Up to 6 Mb/s," and actually getting about 3.5 Mb/s.

Just another way the big companies like to scam you, really.
